i saw one at Northwield market!!!!!!!!!!

it wasn't 'easy bake oven' branded but was the same thing!!!! i meant to post it on here!  it was £10!¬

I wonder if it was the Ready Steady thing I found that was out of stock everywhere? Thanks Aimiloo, I'll keep checking! Though that one wasn't for me  ;)

I did think of another idea for my cooking dilemma though, I think when I have some time off I may work on making some bigger meals then freezing them into individual portions. See, you guys got the wheels turning in my head, I may get a break from this cereal kick yet  ;D

Yup - my plan is to the do chicken or roast thing on Sunday with the slow cooker, take off the meat and put in the freezer in individual portions...then take it out and mix with other veg and spice to individualize it during the next week or two.

so that I can cook a roast or chicken once a week and use that regularly as either my meal or part of my meal.

Sorry to go O/T, but did I understand this correctly - you can put a whole chicken in a slow cooker? or say a piece of beef????

I never realised that- I assumed they had to have liquid and I never got that right so ended up giving it away, I made everything too runny but I would like to get another one in the U.S and try again

Veggie tofu fried rice is my favourite meal for one. You can eat the whole wok full and it's only a few WW points!

I did think of another idea for my cooking dilemma though, I think when I have some time off I may work on making some bigger meals then freezing them into individual portions.

My grandmother used to do this after my grandfather passed away.  She would only cook ONCE a MONTH.  She would use one whole day to make all her meals and freeze them. She was such an efficient lady!  And she never owned a microwave.  She would heat everything up on the stove or in the oven.

I didn't know about the chicken in the slow cooker either.  I have made roast in a slow cooker, but never chicken.  Will have to try that.

just found how to do a whole chicken in the crock pot on cooks.com - dead easy!  Gonna try that this weekend!

When I'm home alone my staple is to halve some cherry tomatoes and put them in a colander. I cook some pasta and drain them over the tomatoes - so they soften up a little but don't actually get cooked. Then I toss with a little bit of good olive oil, some pressed garlic, a few basil leaves, and toasted pine nuts. Mmmm.

Ooh, Anne, you can roast the cherry tomatoes first and drizzle with a balsamic reduction. That's double yum! (In fact, we had this night before last with mushroom bruschetta).

I would cook for myself something nice 3-4 nights a week when I lived on my own. Then I'd eat the leftovers for lunch or dinner or freeze them (potatoes don't freeze/reheat well at all!). Rice/pasta are great for this. I prefer casseroles or one dish meals too and I still do for some reason. I'd recommend you're own hamburger helper:

ground turkey or beef
cheese soup
diced tomatoes
canned mushrooms
pasta (spiral or penne) - wholewheat

yummy and freezes/reheats nicely. MMMMMmmm...I have to make that soon. You can also substitute cream of mushroom soup and add cheese instead of cheese soup.

good luck!

That sounds gorgeous!

I do have a question for all you *foodies* out there...can you get *Cream-of* soups here in the UK?

I found loads of crock pot recipes on about.com, but most called for *Cream-of-something or the other soup*.

Wow! I am not quite that efficient, ambitious or patient! I have made note of lots of your great ideas on here though, and am looking forward to trying some real food now and then even if it is only me. No more sunflower seeds and diet coke for supper  ;) Well maybe just once a month!! Thanks everyone! Now I really need to go get a new crockpot, lost mine at a New Years get together a few years back....

Sorry to go O/T, but did I understand this correctly - you can put a whole chicken in a slow cooker?

From what I found on the internet - yes you can!!  And after you have cooked it you are left over with chicken broth.

Here's what I found:

1 whole chicken
Salt & Pepper to taste
1/2 stick butter or margering (USA recipe - need to convert)

Wash chicken and remove giblets from inside.  Dry chicken and rub with butter on all sides.  Sprinkle with salt & pepper (including inside).

Put in crock pot in early morning (about 8:00 a.m.).  Turn crock pot to low - let cook all day.  Should have 2 cups of chicken broth in pot.

I do pasta for myself.. easy stuff like boil some tortellini and just use a jar of sauce.  It's not high brow cooking but it's better than cereal.  I split the portions before I eat so I don't eat it all and then save the leftover for lunch the next day.

Burritos for one are easy too. Sandwiches, salad, big baked potato, grilled chicken or fish on the George Foreman grill (I usually do 2 breasts and save one for later).

I have a hard time cooking for one sometimes too but usually, I just toss the leftovers in the freezer and it's gone soon enough.
Love your life, poor as it is. You may perhaps have some pleasant, thrilling, glorious hours, even in a poorhouse. The setting sun is reflected from the windows of the almshouse as brightly as from the rich man’s abode; the snow melts before its doors as early in the spring. Cultivate property like a garden herb, like sage. Do not trouble yourself much to get new things, whether clothes or friends. Turn the old; return to them. Things do not change; we change. Sell your clothes and keep your thoughts…

Whole chickens, beef/pork/lamb joints...  Of course!  :D
I never put any liquid in with meat in my slow cooker.... it makes its own juice.   It's just like roasting, but doesnt colour the meat.   The skin / surface doesnt brown, so if you want it browned, stick it under the grill just before you serve it.
