Take home pay?
« on: August 18, 2005, 10:19:09 AM »
Ok I am not sure where this goes and has probably been asked a million times but I am very confused.  I dont understand what it is I am looking at.  If a salary says for example 14,000£ annum  I know it's annual and I'd likely get paid by the month but how much take home? How much would I be looking at take home per month?  How much of my salary is going to taxes and all?

Before taxes it is about £1166.66 a month. (£14000 / 12 months)
As for taxes taken out I wouldnt be able to answer that it depends on the individual

Great link but totally depressing!  My husband and I would definitely have to combine our incomes!  That really sucks!  The cheapest flats are in remote parts or thereabouts which means job opportunities are lousy thusly producing an extra transport cost.  Bullocks..I should just stay in Sweden I suppose!

Would me and my husband qualify for a child tax credit and if so how much could we save or earn?  We have 3 children and he's the EU citizen but I am seriously debating becoming a swedish citizen also.  Again with figures using for example 14,000£ or so...(for me) he'd probably earn more.

Yes, you'd be eligible for Child Tax Credit.  Trying to find out how much, however, is not really possible until you apply as it is entirely means-tested/dependent on your entire income as a family.  It also depends on if both of you are working and if you have your children in childcare - you get more if you both work and your child is cared for by a registered childminder, but again this depends on how much childcare you use, for ex., school aged children don't get you as much CTC b/c they are in school most of the day, etc.  If you don't have childcare expenses, and your kids are nursery or school age, don't count on seeing a lot of CTC.

It also decreases as your earnings increase.  Working Tax Credit tops out at about £14,000/family so that's out if you earn more than that.

TBH we've had a LOT of problems w/tax credits, are currently in an appeals process, and I wouldn't count on any income generated from them as a guarantee to move over from another country.  They can also take months to sort out AND you'll need to have your EU citizenship to claim them as well, as you need to have no restrictions on your stay in the UK in order to eligible for them at all.

I found a great site for checking my payslip...you need to know your tax code...which I believe for most of us is 489L (I could be wrong though)....

This will tell you how much you will take home each month and it will show you the amounts of the deductions.
