Advice

Hello all I would appreciate any advice people are willing to share.

I am looking to move from Toronto Canada to the UK. I am 31 married with 2 kids (8&6).  MY parents are orginally from scotland so getting papers for myself shouldn't be difficult.

MY major concern is finding a job before I move... any thoughts.. I am Manager of I.T for a finacial company.

Should I be concerned about anything else?

My mother is also a UK citizen and I was just able to get my citizenship due to that. The first place that I would start would be the application for citizenship, as mine took alsmost 9 months. I am 33 and because of law changes in the UK over the years, you are just not able to get a passport. You actually need to apply for citizenship and then will be able to get a passport. Your wife and children will then be eligible for settlement visas, once you meet the requirements for that. You will need copies of your parents birth certificates, which are available through the registrars office in Edinburgh. I wish I could find telephone numbers for you, but I can not put my fingers on them. You should contact the UK Consulate nearest you and they will get you all of the applications, etc. In the US, I go to www.britainusa.com.

Hope that helps.

Thanks!  Good to know.. Is it pratical to expect to be able to land a lob before moving?  I have spoken to a number of people and they all say to move then look for a job.  This would be find if I didn't have a family...

It may not be so hard if you had your citizenship in order before applying for jobs. I here it is tough if do not have the legal right to work in the UK. We are waiting until we get to the UK.

Does your current company have offices in the UK?  If so, ask for a transfer or look for other positions internally that are located here and let them know that they won't have to worry about work visas, etc as you can get citizenship.

I did that and my company had no issues as there was no paper work to be done by them.
