Teachers in the UK
« on: August 18, 2005, 04:04:26 PM »
Are you mostly happy with the teachers your kids had in the Uk so far?
In what are they different from teachers in the US?
I know each person is different and not 2 teachers can really be compared I am just wondering the general attitude that teachers have towards children.
Thank you

What do you mean with the attitude that teachers have towards children?
I'm an American (with dual citizenship) living in Stockholm, Sweden for almost 6 years.

My Swede and I are looking towards a future move to the UK.

Not sure about "school" teacher but I dont want to put our daughter in any nurserys here because my SIL use to work at one and she said the teachers at the nursery were awful. They yell and scream if the child doesnt do what they want , when they want. So,thats a big no-no.

Maybe they do that there but they sure don't do that here. They would lose their jobs. I have yet to see a teacher (whether it be pre-school or otherwise) yell at a child here and I am a teacher.

Are you saying that all pre-schools in England have staff that scream at the children? If so, how is it that no one has done anything about it?

I don't think an entire system should be based on an experience at one school. There are always schools that are the exception both good and bad.

No.  That's simply not true.  I've put three children through nursury/pre-school and they were not screamed at.  I wouldn't have left them there five minutes if that had been the case.  No one would.

I wrote that to point out that it can't be possible that an entire nation has teachers in pre-school that scream at the kids. The country would have taken notice and done something about it a LONG time ago.

Is this the same SIL that doesn't like you and is jealous of the attention that you are receiving? If so, do you think it's possible that she's trying to scare you by saying these things?

Don't worry, Sabeine. It's not like that at all.

No, not the same SIL, I have 3 of em. I wasnt saying the entire UK was like that, if I came across like that I apologize, I meant the nurserys in Ipswich.

I would also hesitate to say all the nurserys in Ipswich. Your SIL may have a negative experience with a nursery or two-- but I wouldnt assume for a second they are all that way.

I may have used the wrong word "attitude"   Sorry english is not my first language.
When I was in school 30 years ago  teachers would actually yell at the kids in Italy.  Now my daughter is in school here in the US and the teachers are mostly very sweet and understanding with the children.  The schools seem to be very child oriented.   I was just wondering if it is the same in the UK.
Thank you
