Not just like that. You have to live here (legally) for a certain amount of time first - 4 years I think is the minimum or two if you are married to a Brit.

I am guessing from all your questions you are keen to move to the UK?  ;)

A visitor can offically stay here for six months on what is essentially a visa waiver.  You'll need a pretty solid reason to be here such as marriage, school, or a job (which you must get from the US) to keep you here longer than that.  ILR is only accessible to people who have a legal right to settle in the UK.  Visitors do not have this right.
