Gambling in England
« on: September 07, 2005, 05:27:10 AM »
Is gambling legal in most parts of England?  Also if anyone has the slightest idea, would I need a gambling liscence to be a BlackJack dealer there?

YESSS!!!!  Gambling is legal!
There is a bookies shop on just about every street corner in large towns & cities, and most cities will have at least 1 casino.

Im sorry i dont know the rules about whether or not you have to be licenced, but if you are researching this, your search should include the word croupier, since that's what 'dealers' are called here.

Good luck...

Croupiers are cool!  My mom is a Black Jack and poker dealer - as a hobby, but she's 2nd generation card shark and likes nothing more than a game of cards.  Funny, I can barely shuffle a deck.

Yes, the UK is dotted w/casinos and bookies.

In order to be a croupier here in England, you must take a class and then apply for a license. They do a very thorough background check. The easiest way and most cost effective way to get qualified is by finding a casino to sponser you. A friend of mine did that and only had to work for them for 6mos upon being licensed. He is now dealing cards on a cruise ship somewhere.  Goodluck.

I also recently read somewhere that gambling winnings in the UK are not taxable.

So if say, I've taken dealer (or croupier?) training in the U.S., can I just take a test to get a dealers liscence in the U.K.?  I also heard that tips weren't that big a thing in the U.K., just wondering because if that was true...because tips in the U.S. are like half your income.

I have to say i have never tipped a croupier in a British casino.
I dont know if that's just bad manners or ignorance on my part, but i never saw anyone else doing it either....

But I think jobs where you would depend on tips in the US generally pay higher salaries in the UK.

You are not allowed to tip a croupier in the UK at least not in England. My fiance worked as a floor manager for a large casino here in Stockholm many years ago and went on a program exchange to the UK for a month. No tipping was allowed. Even if you wanted to tip the "dealer" you wouldn't be allowed to. It is the same here in Sweden as well.

P.S. I worked as a Black Jack croupier (it's also called that here) for a month after I had just moved here and although it was a learning experience it was most certainly not my cup of tea.  :)
I'm an American (with dual citizenship) living in Stockholm, Sweden for almost 6 years.

My Swede and I are looking towards a future move to the UK.

Do you know the average salary a blackjack croupier would get in the U.K.?  In small casino in the U.S. I could make about $35,000 dollars a year including tips.

Googled this for you:

http://www.learndirect-advice.co.uk/helpwithyourcareer/jobprofiles/profiles/profile1266/

Salary seems to be about £13,000.... more like £18,000 in London.
Doesnt quite come close to your $35,000.
