In our area there's a local paper (weekly) with a property section in it - that's where we found our last two rentals.... Either that or go to the high street in the area you want to move to and register with the estate agents there....

No clue what the prices are like in Luton.... Try looking at estate agency websites....

http://www.lettingweb.com/Dir_Property_Txt-2_LocType-1_ID-00KA_Luton.htm

You won't be able to get a letting agent to search on your behalf before you get here unless you use a specialized house finding agent- a different ballgame to letting agents.  The letting market moves very quickly in the U.K and often things come and go within a week.

Letting agents are notoriously bad for getting back to you once you have left your details with them, the onus is on you to keep checking back with them.

There are plenty of resources on the internet if you have a look around  (another one is rentamatic.com) as well as on this forum (do spend some time searching the forums, there is a ton of relevant info on searching for somewhere to live).

Personally, if I were you, I'd find a reasonable B&B, scout your areas and be ready to move as soon as something in your price range/area is available.

We made a special trip to London to find a flat about 3 months before our move. Glad we did too because the photos on the Internet agencies are very misleading. Like they dont tell you that the great flat is surrounded by council housing (i.e. public housing) or is overtop a 24-hour discoteque.  But if you cant afford to fly beforehand, I strongly recommend using an agency. They can guide you to find the property that's right for you. We used Foxtons, probably one of the more expensive agencies but well worth the cost.
