i just haven't found the right food for the brown sauce, i think. what are the most traditional, and maybe even untraditional, foods for slathering upon?

Just about anything!  ;D

Neither.  I hate A1; I don't like to cover up the taste of my steak.  If it has to be covered up, then there's something wrong with it.  And, as far as brown sauce goes, I gave it a chance on eggs and such, like my husband uses it.  Didn't care for it.

Speaking of sauces, has the HP sauce changed there? I have happily been buying HP in the states forever and last week my husband came hoem with a bottle and it says, "New and Improved". It tastes just like A-1 steak sauce and is now made in the US by the A-1 steak sauce company. It was, needless to say, very disappointing. I'm hoping this is just a state side change.

I'm with Songmistress - if your steak needs sauce then it wasn't cooked properly. A well seasoned juciy steak is yummy on it's own. If it's dry and yicky I'll put A-1 on it.
