Converting a US resume to a UK CV
« on: September 18, 2005, 02:02:29 PM »
Hi all.  Does anyone have a site that will help you convert your resume to an exceptable UK CV?  I know they expect different things in the UK so I want to make sure when I can finally work there that I "fit" in.  Thanks.

A while back, there was a great post on this site about writing a CV, including examples:

Thanks Stuzgrl.  I can interview like a pro over here in the US but just don't have the foggiest idea what to expect over there.  Of course I can't work until we are married anyway but want to do as much research in advance so I can be ready when the time come.  Best to get the CV done now since it will be very busy when I move.  Have a good one.

Englishspring,
It may seem like an impossible task, but converting your resume to a UK CV is simple as well as the interview phase. I had a site three years ago so if I find it I'll send it to you for review. There are many differences between both countries especially the process of finding work. The best site to use prior to actually living here is www.gaapweb.com [nofollow] if your currently looking for work in finance or business. Most of the recruiters have sites and until your actually here its best not to try and make appointments or apply for positions as you won't get to far unless your actually in country and have your visa in hand. The Brits move slow when it comes to jobs and actually making a short list of potential people to interview. Don't get discouraged, keep plugging away and stick to the field your currently in and see if there is a related position here in the UK. If you know of US companies in the UK, contact them directly, you may get lucky. My wife is British and lived with me in the states for 5 years and got home sick so we moved back in 2003 and my biggest concern was work, it shouldn't have been, as the interviews and people were great and 6 weeks after arriving I was employed. Any questions let me know, its always good to have a sounding board especially from people who did what your going to do. Our mistakes are your benefits.
Cheers Mate!

Thanks so much for the information.  It is extremely nice to know that others have paved the way so to speak.  If you happen to run across the link for the CV I would love to see it.  I will check out www.gaapweb.com as well.  Thanks again.

Found the site, it's http://resume.monster.com/dilemmas/resumeintocv/ [nofollow] . If your looking for work in accountancy or finance, and you have an US accounting background you will be sought after in the UK. There is a real need for US trained accountants or those that have studied US GAAP or worked in an accounting environement in a US company in the states. Feel free to email me at my normal address if you need some inside info. I'll be happy to give you as much info or field as many questions as need be.

Thanks so much for the link!!!!   My background is not in accounting unfortunately.  I am an Executive Assistant to high level executives.  Hopefully they are in demand as well.  Thanks again!!!

Is it standard for Americans in the UK to put their High School education on their CVs?  I havn't

Also, I worked at something with the word Center in it, I didn't change it to Centre, because it was a title, was I correct to do this?
