HantsMamma, thanks so much for your input. One of the main reasons we want a more kickback, rural life is because I am now a mother. We want a farm that my daughter can grow up and enjoy. Quality of life is priority for us right now.

There are alot of really good small towns in KY. Everyone is usually really friendly. When I was a kid, I lived in a tiny town west of Nashville for a little while and loved it. I'm more of a city girl now, but if I ever have kids I would seriously consider moving to a small town.

I had a pony, chickens, goats, dogs, cats....lots of animals. My neighbors (we had two other houses near ours) had cows.  I would ride for hours everyday, and my mom would just let me wonder off (I took a walkie-talkie with me just in case). I probably never rode more than a mile away from home, but back then I thought I was going on forever! LOL.

Angie,
thanks for giving me some great feedback on here, I appreciate  it more than you know. It's fantastic to hear from someone who has had the kind of childhood that I want for my daughter. I too grew up in a somewhat rural area, I'm really close to the city here and although I like the convenience of everything, I loathe the dirt, litter, crime aspect and just want something more idyllic for Hope. Like you she'll probably end up being a city girl herself, we always want we can't have but I have a feeling that when she much older she'll head back to the peace and quiet to raise her family, we'll see??

One more thing...be sure to check out the schools where ever you are planning on living. Just because it's a small place doesn't mean the schools are good. When we lived in the country, the public (government) school were awful. My parents pulled me out and put me in a private school. But that school had some serious administration problems. Since those were the only two schools near us, my mom decided to homeschool me. (which i loved doing...more time to travel with my grandparents, i got to babysit alot, more free time, and i had several friends who were also homeschooled)

Angie, great point! The location definately depends on a good school being nearby. Do you know anything about Danville by any chance?

I don't, but I have relatives all over KY. If you want, I'll e-mail my dad and ask him if he knows the area or knows anyone who does.

Ok, here's what my dad had to say

"Danville was the site of the Vice Presidential debate when Bush first ran for office (not the last
election-the one before that.   It is a beautiful town and Centre college
(the site of the debate) is there.  The town is located down HWY 127 and is
not far from I-75.  It is growing and the surrounding area is gorgeous!
Manchester is kind of on the way to Hindman.  Danville does not have the
mountain Heights Manchester does.  Danville is hilly but no mountains.  You
have all the conveniences in Danville you need without the big city
headaches of Lexington and Louisville.  Your cousin Janet graduated from Centre college a long time ago."

Is there anything specific you wanted to know?

PS...when he says manchester, he means manchester, KY-- not UK! (there's also a Manchester, TN!  ;D ) Hindman is where all of his family is originally from--it is in the middle of no where.

I'm not sure about Kentucky, but here (TN) it doesn't rain all the time (we're having a bit of a drought right now). We do get thunderstorms (especially in the spring) but as long as your not living in a mobile home you should be ok. It isn't like Manchester, UK rain at all. I think of England rain as kind of an all day, freezing cold drizzle. Tennessee thunderstorms are more like pouring buckets for a few minutes, maybe an hour, then it's over.

It's 81F (24C) here today by the way  ;D Very warm for this time of year!

Thanks Angie,

please tell your dad I appreciate all of his help. I'm jealous of your weather, it's been raining here for the past 3 days and I haven't seen a blue sky in weeks  :(
