Technical Writing in the UK
« on: August 13, 2005, 07:35:43 PM »
Does anyone know anything about technical writing positions in the UK? I have a cousin (an American) who is interested in relocating in the UK but didn't know if he'd be able to find work. He is what I believe would be termed a Senior Technical Writer with scads of experience.

Thanks!

Don't know much except this: Have a friend who does the same thing and he's been out of work for a while now (years). He's been able to get temp/contract jobs doing something completely different but nothing in that field.
He lives in Manchester and in London maybe there's a better chance of finding something?

Thanks, DW! My cousin who is interested in relocating is a technical writer. Haven't been very encouraged by the info we've gotten so far. But, he's also interested in teaching so he may take that route.

Paula,

I've been doing technical writing on and off since about 1986, although I've dropped it the last couple of years with the pressure of other work.

My experience in the field has always been from a purely freelance angle, submitting articles "on spec" for consideration, or getting a contract for a regular monthly article with a particular journal, paid per job.    Rates vary considerably from one publisher to another and depending upon the type of publication.  With freelance work you can still write for U.S. publishers from Britain of course -- I did some work for Gernsback (Farmingdale, NY) a few years ago.

Presumably though your cousin would be looking at getting a permanent position with a company in order to get a visa etc.    I'm afraid I have no experience from that perspective, and I would imagine obtaining such a position would be much more of a challenge.

Thanks, Paul, a permanent position IS what he's been looking into. There doesn't seem to be much offered, though. He's also thinking about a mid-life career change as well as relocation to either the UK or Australia. I think he's looking into opportunities in Australia right now. I, of course, would prefer that he concentrate on the UK since I'll be there myself in a few months. But, then, I've always wanted to visit Oz..... ;D
