Headaches while pregnant
« on: September 28, 2005, 02:05:00 PM »
I have been suffering from severe headaches that last for over twelve hours with little relief.  Does anyone have any recommendations for pain relief?  I am in my first trimester, a few times I have taken Tylenol but the headaches keep coming with force.

Have you tried steaming your face?  Or some of that '4Head' stuff?

You're very limited as to what you can take in the first trimester - basically to paracetemol/acetominophen (Tylenol).

A little spearmint oil or Olbas oil massaged in to the base of the neck or the temples can sometimes help if you're looking for non-medicated relief.  A little goes a LOOONG way, though, so use sparingly.  Also, lying down in a darkened room w/a cold cloth can help, although sometimes that's easier said than done, especially w/kids in the house!

Hope you're feeling better soon!
When I am grown-up I will understand how BEAUTIFUL it feels to administrate my life effectively.

Until then I will continue to TORCH all correspondence that bores me and to dance NAKED over the remnants of its still glowing embers.

Do you wear contacts or glasses? Sometimes pregnancy can cause changes in your prescription and these can lead to headaches.

Make sure you're eating enough as well....low blood sugar can cause wicked headaches....

I was going to suggest this. I always get headaches when I am dehydrated. Very important especially when pregnant to stay hydrated.

was gonna say water as well but hg and ricki beat me to it  ;) , also try and avoid caffeine as much as you can. I got really bad headaches in my first trimester as well, and they helped.

Thanks for all the suggestions.  I went to the doctor today, she said I have a sinus infection.  My headaches have been so bad, I was in tears last night.  I was getting headaches for a few weeks now, so it is pregnancy related with the sinus infection only causing more head pain.

Ooh, yuk.  I suffer from frequent sinus infections myself...they are miserable.  Hope you're on the mend again soon.

Oh man, and sometimes pregnancy can give you a constantly stuffed/running nose too because of the hormonal thingies. If you have recurring sinus troubles without being pregnant, can I recommend an air cleaner? I am a new convert to them after getting them for our house and they have helped elimate runny noses for me & my daughter. Just a thought. Good luck.

Poor you!  I had one of these when I was pregnant w/Aillidh.  I usually get one a year anyhow.  Take the antibiotics!  As long as it's not tetracycline.

Get you some Steri-Mar from the chemists counter NOW and spray that saline into your nostrils every single night before bed and again in the morning before you go out.  Believe you me, as a veteran sinusitis sufferer, it will cut the number of attacks and infections you get.

Also pick up a tube of Happy Nose - a herbal ointment that's not quite as strong as Vick's, but just as effective.

Drink lots and lots of water, too.

I burn a mix of tea tree, orange or lemon and bergamot oil in an oil burner as well.

Hope it passes soon!
