Hello all.
« on: October 15, 2003, 05:18:31 AM »
My husband is interviewing for a job in West Midlands working with the NHS. I am so excited at the prospect of moving to the UK that I have been trying to find out all that I can. I have a few questions that maybe someone here can answer.

1. Are Dr. Marten shoes as big a thing in the UK as they are here in the states?

2. What about panty hose? Do British women wear them as much as American women? Maybe I can do the hairy leg thing like they do in Germany.

3. (More on the serious side) If I bring DVD movies with me, will they work on a TV that we purchase over there....can I use the DVD player that we have now, or will I need to get a new one? Is the format the same?

Those are just a couple of the questions that I have. I'm sure there will be more to come. Hubby's interview is next week in NYC. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Yep!  (looks down at her stompy Doc boots)  Most definitely.

Yep, pantyhose can be found here except you'll hear them referred to as tights not pantyhose.  And yes, easily available in lots of places: supermarkets, drug stores, clothing shops, etc.  Anyplace you'd find them in the US, you'd find them in the same places here.  Lots of choices.

I BELIEVE the DVD players are different here and therefore US DVDs may not play in a UK player.  But I'm not 100% sure on that.  Someone will come along and say for sure and correct me here.

Again, best of luck to him and welcome aboard!

Hi there.  Just wanted to say that DVD's are definately not compatible...but you can buy a DVD player that will read both.  You can even buy one that is dual voltage and that way you can cart it globally.  I know that there is a link somewhere on this site to a company that sells them... now to find it....
Added later....I knew it was here!  http://www.dvdoverseas.com/store/index.html?catalog86_0.html
and...WELCOME!

If you bring over DVD's, but buy your DVD player here, just make sure you get what's called a multi-region DVD player, meaning it will play them all. :) Don't know about bringing your own though. Anyway - welcome!!! And hope your hubby does great with the interview.

Hi Nettak and welcome here.  Sorry I'll be no help whatsoever in your questions!  ;)   But, I can offer a friendly word or two.  I'm happy you've joined us and would love to hear more about your plans as you go along.  Take care.

The job offer is in the Tipton/Rowley-Regis (not sure of the spelling) area. I understand that this area is economically depressed and underserved in health care. Besides having a large immigrant population, I don't really know much about it.
