Halloween?
« on: October 09, 2004, 01:30:05 PM »
Hi All,

I was wondering if Halloween is celebrated in the UK like it is in the US?

TIA
Joanne

Not at any length compared to the US. In the town I lived in last year, I saw some Halloween deco in store windows... Dance clubs offered free admission to people arriving in costumes. That was about it. Didnt even see any trick or treaters on the streets.

it's much less of a big thing here. 'Trick or treat' was absolutely unknown here until about 10-15 years ago. Doubtless the kids picked it up from U.S. t.v.

:)So would it be silly or just not accepted to put a craved pumpkin with a candle on the front porch??  I would have done this in the States.  I love Halloween and I do miss some of the things that are acceptable in the US but sort of frowned upon here.

We had a carved pumpkin out for Halloween last year and will do so again this year, it was my husbands first time carving one  :) put in the window and didnt put it outside, as we figured it would get nicked.  ::)

But all the people who passed by our house enjoyed it as much as we did.  ;D

Hallowen is by far my favorite holiday..had a collection of the coolest  costumes I had made over the years..  blah..blah.. .but no  it is not celebrated here..  actually  you can get some resentment because it seems  to be an 'imported' holiday from the  states...  aauugghh!  not there!! :D
so i'd forget the pumpkin unless you really really want to ..
the attitude I mostly get here  is 'when in Rome...
anyway..  Happy Halloween  and I do love the  pumpkin icons on here..  yea!!

Thanks for the reply.  I think I will do a pumpkin as I love Halloween and have children.  I will take a picture and post it when I get a chance.

I've never been a 'when in Rome' kind of person.  Having pumpkins on Halloween works on many levels-it cheers me up, it's always been a conversation starter with the neighbours and it alerts potential trick-or-treaters to my halloween candy which I always buy.  When I moved here fifteen years ago no one celebrated and decorations of any sort were actually impossible to find.  Now everywhere has costumes and decorations and generally there's an acceptance.  Sure there's going to people who complain and there's also young people who use it as an excuse for bad behavior.  But it's harmless good fun and I've never had any trouble.
We'll be doing pumpkins as usual at this house and this year the fourteen year old is having a Halloween party.  Should be fun.   ::)

I am acutally shocked to see so many Halloween things in the stores here.... I thought I would not see any at all.  Even B&Q has pumpkin lights and little light up skeletons..... so well what can I say.... as for the when in Rome bit.... you know what?  I have been all over the place and I have always celebrated my family holidays.  You do what makes you happy.  I think the melding of traditions in multi-cultural household is brilliant.  So put your pumkin out (or in the window) and be proud.

I've been here over 9 years and I noticed how much Halloween has grown in popularity. I even notice a big leap from last year. So the kids have picked out their costumes and we'll circuit the street and probably be lucky to get candy from every 3rd door.... They absolutely love it! And i'm going to a grownup Halloween party for the first time here so i'm pretty excited too...only bummer is the costume has to be scary....they don't seem to like the idea of dressing up as anything you want.....

Thanks guys, on that note I'm also going to do a pumpkin. I just gave birth to a daughter and I'd hate for her to miss out on the US halloween traditions, so the more of us take part the faster it will catch on  ;)
