Non disposable nappies
« on: October 30, 2005, 09:01:03 AM »
Does anyone here use non disposable nappies?  I have been using them, but they continue to leak.  I use pre-folds with a nappy cover.  Any suggestions on how to prevent them from leaking?

I always thought there was a bit of a leak factor with just the cloth. You can double up and that should help some especially if you are out and about. Can't you also find absorbency sucker pads to put inside? Plastic nappy covers with cloth linings work well too.

I think this is just one of the downsides of being eco-friendly  :-\\\\

I don't use washable nappys, but when my hubby was a baby his mum used em on him. She used the plastic covers on em  and it helped with leaking

I've always used disposable diapers but I heard the cloth, velcro ones are good.

In the states there are a few companies that make enviornmentally friendly disposable diapers. I'm wondering if that is an option in the UK.

There's only one brand.  They're called Moltex.  Unfortunately, they're quite expensive.  A lot of folks I know who use real nappies use Moltex whilst going out.

Have you tried 'The Nappy Lady's website, dannygirl?  I think it's thenappylady.co.uk.  Some mums on there exchange tips about using real nappies.

I use the waterproof covers, but he still finds a way to wet himself.  I haven't tried the sucker pads, they sound like a good idea.  I will try those.

Are you using a boy fold with the nappy when you put it on him? Folding them improperly can cause a lot of leaking.

Your baby is very young yet isn't he?  The cloth diapers tend to leak more with little bottoms.  You may find that as he grows the leaking will stop or at least not be so dramatic.  Good for you for using them.  I kept talking about it, but never did.

I didn't know that there was a boy fold.  That may be one reason why they are leaking.  Went to the shop today and brought another cloth liner to go on top of the first liner but I haven't used it yet.  I don't won't him to be uncomfortable with to many layers.

When you pull up the diaper, is his winkie pointing up or down.......that can make a difference. We are still potty training our son, and he's at the age where he's always playing with his winkie.....if he pulls it up while he's sleeping, it just goes right up out of the diaper, and soaks his shirt and the top of his pants. (trousers) Then he complains....and moans, and I have to get up and change him......then I can't go back to sleep.....and on and on it goes!!

Have you tried fitteds or all in one's? I"ve had some really good luck with a fitted and a PUL cover (although we can't use velcro or aplix anymore, he likes to take the diapers off)

This is difficult to explain in writing, but...here goes. You lay the diaper out flat and lay your son on it like usual. Tri fold the front half of the nappy and pull forward between his thighs and then fold the the top half of the tri folded part in toward him and pull the back corners around and fasten with clip or whatever you use. If folded properly, this puts about 6 layers of nappy right over his penis and should prevent leaks. I have worked as a nanny for many babies who used cloth diapers and this type of fold always worked the best ( doubled if possible) for boys who seem to be able to pee through everything :).  I hope that the directions make some sense. I will keep trying to find a link to some pictures.

Good instructions, Liz, I knew exactly what you meant.

I used cloth diapers with my daughter. The ones I had were shaped and had a place to insert pads (which were just the old fashioned diapers that had to fold into a shape). She wasn't uncomfortable with the extra padding and we'd double it at night. That and plastic pants took care of leaks. This was all 24 years ago. From what I've seen, they now make shaped cloth diapers with elastic at the legs and everything. Just shop around and I'm sure you'll find something that works.
