COLLEGE FOOTBALL?!?!?!?
« on: September 09, 2005, 10:42:32 PM »
Desperately needing a pub in Central or SW London that shows American College Football. I miss my Sun Devil and Badger games! Let me know...

Hate to break it to you but you'll be hard pressed to find a pub that plays NFL games, let along college ones.  Your best bet is to get hooked up to NASN channel.  Otherwise I think you may be out of luck. :(

Try the Sports Cafe in Haymarket SW1, that's your best bet as they have dozens of screens.

Bodean's Smoked BBQ
169 Clapham High Street SW4
3 minute walk to the north west of 100 pub

Bodean's is a restaurant that perfectly evokes the atmosphere of a middle-of-the-road American diner. Muted colours, fixed seats and plasma screens showing baseball, NFL and basketball transport you to the minor suburbs of a medium-sized mid-Western town. The menu mostly consists of big lumps of meat - racks of ribs, half chickens, burgers and steaks form the bulk of what's on offer. This might sound depressing, but that's only because it's a cuisine that is normally done very badly in the UK. Fortunately, Bodeans is the genuine article, owned, run and frequented by Americans, and gets it just right. Everything is cooked on a smoky barbecue, and if the meat comes out a little dry, it also comes out with a flavour like a punch to the mouth. When meat tastes this strong, there's no shame in drowning it in rich, simple sauces, and a selection of numbered bottles are a ketchup-lover's heaven, offering loads of variations on the familiar theme. Normally, when a UK restaurant does its own version of baked beans, you find yourself wishing for Heinz, but here, they form a spicy mash of soft textures that perfectly complements the unsubtle, delicious meats. And as with all the best American diners, you'll come out a good few pounds heavier than you went in. I only ate two courses, and that was enough to see me through the evening and most of the next day. It's not sophisticated, it's not attractive and it's certainly not healthy, but it is an unadulterated pleasure. more

Yeah, the smoker in Bodeans comes from Oklahoma!!  (I envy the people of SoHo who get to wake up to that smell at 8 am :))  I was well impressed- not only were the ribs to die for (pork ones), but almost sports overload, with everything from baseball to boxing (football season hadn't started when we were there last)

I know this is late, but hopefully, Brooklyngirl is still reading this. . . .

First of all, kudos to the Sun Devils. I'm an SC alum, and they gave us a hell of a scare this past Saturday. Good game!

Second, I know the Trojan alums in London meet at Bodeans or the Sports Cafe. I live in Aberdeen, so I don't know how this works out for them. . . .I do plan on going to London in December to watch the battle of Good vs. Evil (the USC vs. fucla game) play out with them.

If you can stand watching games away from a sports bar (i.e., your living room on a computer screen) I would recommend two things: 1) ESPN GamePlan online. You'll get about ten games a week. The quality is actually pretty good. . . . 2) A Slingbox, if you have a good friend/family member back home with premium cable. My dad set one up for my husband and I, and we have been pleased with it. www.slingmedia.com

Good luck!

Brimarie,

hi, my wife and i live in aberdeen as well.  have you tried the all-star cafe on Union terrace, just off union street?  Also, we've had to get our american sports via internet radio broadcasts.  It's not the same as tv, but it works.

I need to book mark that address.  MeShell, I'm sure this will feel like heaven next year if I get homesick in London.  I'll have to remember this place... the food sounds gooood!

Edit to add:

BTW, MeShell, you should find yourself a job writing for a cooking magazine or something!  WOW, you have a knack for selling food.  My mouth was watering just reading it...
