can you make . . .
« on: November 04, 2005, 12:36:28 PM »
Is it difficult to find an 8 pound an hour job in the UK? I realize that this is a broad question and could have several variables, but I am hoping to find a job of almost any sort when I first arrive just until we have a better idea of what my husband will be making and to give me time to work on establishing business contacts for myself.  I am an interior designer with 10 plus years of experience. I have done quite alot of consrtuction design, space planning, etc. for new homes and for remodles. I would take work for another designer or for an interior shop or a builder or really any kind of shop.

We have definietely decided on area based on my husbands work contacts. We'll be in Dorset or Somerset. If anyone has any thing to offer, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks

It depends on what type of job you're looking for. Retail will pay sh*t... Um. Jamie works at the library at the college and I don't think he gets £8 an hour. I would just google something like, "what jobs pay £8 an hour?"That might help.

Look for jobs that pay £15-16k....that'll give you £8/hr (before taxes, based on a 40 hr week).  I can't see why you'd have a hard time finding jobs in that pay range.

You should look at places like Selfridges and department stores like house of fraizer. I saw they need window dressers and that would fit with your interior designer background.

That's a great idea and it sounds like a fun job to boot. Thanks for the advice.

I'm not sure how much they make but i know it's more than a regular sales position there.

Also a lot of cosmetics companies etc. do the same thing-you go to places that sell your product and be sure they are positioned correctly-check the stocks etc.

It keeps you moving and is decent money.  I know that they do it in the states (eons ago i thought about it as i worked in merchansing a while) but i bet they need it here.
