electric tea kettles
« on: April 18, 2006, 10:38:28 PM »
Okay everyone...my housemate back here in FL and I were discussing this earlier. We LOVE the British electric tea kettles where you fill, flip the switch, and have boiled water in like a minute.
But we have been unable to find them in the States.

Does anyone know where we can get one in the US?
Or, alternately, would we be able to use one from the UK with an adaptor???

not looking for anything fancy, just fast and in working order!

They have 2 or 3 different electric kettles in Target  ;D.  I've also seen them in Bed, Bath & Beyond and Linen n Things.

My parents have an electric kettle at home...I don't know exactly where they got it, but they are definitely available in the US! :)

They're a little slower to boil here because of the lower voltage but to be honest I don't really notice any difference. We got ours in Linens N Things for $50. That would be cool if you can get one for $20 in Target! If you don't have any luck, try Sears as I've seen them in there too.

we got one at Target for a friend and one at Sears (or Penny's) for us...one was $30 the other $20

it is a bit slower to boil but only slightly...and well worth it! YAY!

They're a little slower to boil here because of the lower voltage

Not so much the lower voltage in itself, but because the maximum power which can be drawn from a regular wall outlet is lower:

U.K.  240 volts x 13 amps = 3120 watts max.
U.S.  120 volts x 15 amps = 1800 watts max.

In fact there seem to be few modern U.K. kettles which approach 3kW like many of the older ones.  2kW seems to be about average these days.

You could use a British kettle in the U.S. with a change of plug if you have a convenient 240V 15A outlet somewhere.   Most American homes do have 240V as well as 120V, but the outlets for it are only fitted in a few specific places where needed (range, dryer, larger air-con units, etc.).
