moving and electronics
« on: December 08, 2005, 05:53:07 PM »
I realize this has probably been asked a million times before, but I am using library computers with a very limited time allowed, so I can't read all the back posts.
So, to reiterate the question, what can I/can't I bring in terms of electronics/electric devices? Specifically, I'm wondering about using a laptop (are some brands better in this respect than others?) and things that have rechargeable batteries, like digital cameras, ipods, and portable tools (rechargeable drills and such). Also, what about non-battery tools, like a Dremel?
I have heard of a type of converter (UPS, but I don't know what that stands for) that converts everything to 12V DC and then back to 110V AC using a car battery. Not very portable, but could work at home. Has anyone else used one of these?
Thanks for taking the patience to answer a much asked question.
but what do I know?

hi there
i don't have all the answers but a few:

laptop - i had a us laptop and actually bought a new power cord/supply to work here in the uk. this is a better solution than just buying a converter to stick on the end of a US plug. you shoudl be able to get this by going to the manufacturer website (e.g. dell, toshiba, ibm)

re: electronics like ipods, cameras, etc.... i have just bought a converter plug which you can get in the airport or travel store.

good luck

mimsy, does your laptop operate on either 110 or 220, or do you still have to run it thru a converter?
but what do I know?
