Train/Tube to Heathrow
« on: December 09, 2005, 11:53:23 AM »
going to heathrow b/f i've alternated on taxi or train & tube (depending on if it's me solo or more than one).

however, this time I'm flying BA, hence T4, which isn't really served properly by the tube anymore.  so i'm going to have to take the train from wellingborough to st. pancreas, tube to paddington, heathrow express to heathrow.

are their escalators/elevators in St. Pancreas & Paddington?  i travel pretty light, but i'm going home for xmas- perhaps one large wheelie bag and a briefcase.   Looking on thetube.co.uk doesn't really tell me the accessablity issues.

insight all you london girls?

Perhaps www.tfl.gov.uk would be more helpful?  It will show you which stations are handicapped-accessible, although they wouldn't consider escalators to be handicapped-accessible, whereas you would probably be fine on an escalator.

thanks for that link... the only stairs i can see is actually walking from St. Pancreas to Kings Cross station.  It has two stairs shown.  I think that means two staircases(?) i could manage that with a wheelie, perhaps?

try using the advanced options for the journey planner and select that you can't use stairs on the same link

I think there are only stairs at Paddington (coming in from the tube), but I'm not positive.
I would just call London Transport and speak to someone to find out all the details for sure.

There's probably a lift for disabled and elderly people.  There usually is at big train stations like Paddington.  I think there if you are coming off the Hammersmith and City line but don't quote me on that.

Not sure if you still need this info, but if so, we are at Paddington pretty frequently. I don't recall that we have used a lift there - I think it is just escalators.

RE: the tube station accessibility - anything with Jubilee line going through it has lifts, in my expereince (I am usually pushing a stroller so am always aware of which stations I don't have to deal with stairs).

RE: the Tube service to Heathrow T4 - don't mess with the replacement bus service from Hatton Cross like they tell you to. Just get off at the other tube stop. Then go in the terminal and follow the signs for Terminal 4. You can take a pedestrian subway with a moving sidewalk. We may have had to briefly get on the train, and then get out at the next terminal, but it was free. (Sorry to be so vague, the departure and arrival have blurred a bit in my brain). Anyway, I wouldn't rule out the tube to Heathrow just because of the replacement bus service as there are ways around it that are much easier to deal with.
Stop waiting. Start doing.
