finding doctors that specialize in . . .

Can anyone help me with the process of finding a doctor that specializes in a certain field? Is there a web site directory that anyone knows of or do I just have to go to the GP that we sign up for and get a referral? I have had some terrible sinus problems and will most likely need surgery in the near future. Seeing as we leave for the UK on the 29th, I will be having such surgery in the UK. I am wondering what my best plan of attack is for finding a specialist and getting it done as soon as possible.

If you are going through NHS, you will have to get a referral from a GP.  I'm not sure about the rules for private insurance.
