Leaving Chicago O'Hare/I-94's
« on: January 24, 2006, 11:44:15 PM »
My Brit boyfriend came to visit me last month here in the US for 2 weeks and left on Jan 1- he flew Chicago O'Hare-Manchester.  Does anyone familiar with that airport know if they have those new US-VISIT exit machines there and if he was supposed to use one?  It seems like he should have from what I've read on the web but he says he never saw any of the machines there...his I-94 was taken out of his passport at the gate, though.  I'm just paranoid that something will have messed up and they'll think he's an overstayer when he comes back to visit me in April~ can anyone give me some reassurance??  ;)

Sorry to be late on this but yes they have those machines.  I saw them when I left on the 6th of January this year.  I'm a US citizen so I didn't give them more than a glance but I definitely saw them when I was milling around waiting for the flight.  Don't know if he was supposed to use them but I would guess since they're so new it can't be too big of a deal if he didn't know about it?

San Francisco has them too. There were also loads of US-Visit staff in well marked polo shirts if a person needs help.

Yikes...this doesn't sound too good.  I knew there were machines there but he insists he didn't see them and I guess if there was nobody around making announcements or anything it can't be that big of a deal.  I'll get him to bring something to prove he's been back in the UK since then...but I'm not sure what would suffice since he doesn't have his boarding pass (I don't know if his passport got stamped, but I'm guessing not?)  I was thinking of a letter from his uni...hopefully that will be enough  :-\\\\

I sent Customs and Border Protection an email- they said to expect an answer within 10-15 business days.  Still hunting around the DHS website for a phone number though...

I'm hoping that since he did turn in his I-94 (which is still the main way of tracking overstays) that he'll be fine- but I'd love to get a definite answer...le sigh.
