Proof of US license to get UK insurance?
« on: December 07, 2005, 12:22:45 AM »
I haven't called any insurance companies yet, cause I dont have a car and not sure if im going to be driving yet or not.  but what do they require for proof that you have a US license?  do they check your record? and would speeding tickets show up? or do they just accept the fact that you have a license?
cheers

I don't recall ever being asked to prove I have driver's license (UK) when taking out insurance here.   I suppose the insurance companies aren't too worried about it, since in the event of a claim the policy would be void anyway if it emerged you had no license.

Whether they might ask for proof when you tell them you have an overseas license, I don't know.

When i applied online for car insurance they stated upon completion of my application that i would have to apply for a UK licence. I assumed they meant after one years time driving on my US licence, but i was given a policy ???

If you had no claims in the States then get something from your insurance company to that effect. When I got here and insured with AA they gave me credit for 5 years no claims.....saved me a couple of hundred quid right from the start.

is there anything to stop people from claiming they have a license from another country and then getting insurance? that just seems weird they dont ask for any proof.

I honestly have no idea but it does seem likely that if someone claimed that they had a license and didn't, and then were involved in an accident, that the insurance company would deny the claim.
The only meaning anything has is the meaning you give to it.       ~Author Unknown

And in the meantime they're collecting monthly premiums, so you're right....they don't care. And if you're unlucky enough to get snapped by a speed camera anywhere then the cops know too. If I'm not mistaken then I think you need insurance just have the car parked in front of your home otherwise it can be towed away. You can leave it parked up without a current MOT but not without insurance.

I think that technically you are supposed to have a valid MoT certificate just to have it parked on a public street.   You certainly are required to display a current tax disc, as I'm sure you're aware.   (If parked on private property, it's a different matter entirely, of course.)    Although the police and wardens will look for expired or missing tac discs on parked cars, the chances of having no MoT queried are probably tiny though.

The insurance question raises an interesting gray area.    Under British law, it is not the vehicle per se which is required to be insured, but the driver for his use of that vehicle.    At the moment, there is no requirement to have the vehicle named explicitly on any policy, as it can be driven quite legally by almost all policyholders under the "other vehicles" clause.    So when the car is parked and there is no driver, does the question of insurance even arise?

I said "at the moment" because the government has proposed a change in the law to create an offense of being the registered keeper of a vehicle with no insurance (exceptions for vehicles declared off road, etc.).     It's been stated that there is no intent to change the basic principle of the driver being insured, not the vehicle, but to do one without the other seems impossible.    It's the usual half-baked proposals we've come to expect from this lot, I suppose.   ::)

We had a long discussion about the proposed changes over on the Pepipoo forum a while back:
