Teaching ESL to adults in the UK
« on: December 23, 2005, 08:54:46 PM »
Hello! My name is Angela, I am 31, married (no kids), a US citizen - as is my husband.

I have always wanted to live in the UK and have finally begun doing some research into the possibility. I've been searching back through the threads on jobs and visas, but still have a couple unanswered questions and I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction.  I posted the first question  on visas in the visa thread, so I'll just post the job-related question here.

Question: I will graduate in February with a Master's degree in English as a Second Language (ESL). I have a couple years of teaching experience already and would like to work as an ESL teacher in the UK, teaching adults. There are a few points I'm not sure about: Will my mild midwestern American accent be a drawback in finding ESL teaching jobs? And since I want to teach adults either at the University level or in a private ESL school, will I need further education/qualifications beyond my M.A. and experience? (In addition, I have 6 years of experience as a technical writer and web designer.)

Thanks for your help.
Angela

I am certainly no expert Angela but I'd say this is going to be a very difficult field for you to work in in the UK.
Most places will not hire an American for a job that can be filled by a UK or other EU citizen, and I imagine there must be plenty of English teachers here with the number of Asian immigrants

Good luck though, let us know what you find out!
