Guildford and area (agents/prices/etc.)
« on: January 13, 2006, 06:22:48 AM »
Looking for: 2-4 bedroom detached house with garden, around April 1st.

Must be close to shopping/transportation.  (20 minutes walk is fine.)

So far, Savilles has been a pretty good agent, (they've sent lots of listings and photos) but they don't provide addresses for the houses.   So, no idea how far from anything they are.

Any other agents/websites you'd recommend?

For what I want, is 1500-1600 pounds/month reasonable?  1500 is no problem.

I think I've mentioned before, my husband will be working in Weybridge 3 days/week, Blackfriars 2 days/wk.  I've hit on Guildford mostly due to the train lines... and the fact that I might attend the Uni there.  Any other communities I should look at?

Any that I shouldn't?

I won't be driving, but we may consider buying a car for the Blackfriars commute.  Bad idea?

Any info/opinion is good!

OK, I'll be sending this to my husband to ask him.  Not sure about renting as we bought.

Also PM me about the Uni, I used to work there.

From the husband:

Quote
Property websites for rentals:

&sp=0

www.rightmove.co.uk

www.propertyfinder.com

Look for Charlotteville and the area between Woodbridge Road and Stoke
Road.  Queen Elizabeth Park, Merrow & Burpham are nice but a further
out.

Avoid the area around the University, Bellfields and Park Barn.

I wouldn't want to commute to Blackfriars by car - getting that far
across London would take forever.

The places he suggested looking are about a 10 15 minute walk to town and 30 minute walk to the Uni.  The station is about a 10 minute walk to the Uni between these areas.

Thanks!  I'll check out those agents.

About Blackfriars... I checked the commuting time by rail.  (Guildford-Blackfriars)  About an hour 15.

That seems reasonable, but is the estimate accurate, in your experience/opinion?  Driving would be longer?  Blackfriars doesn't seem well connected to anywhere... so Weybridge is our priority, as far as commuting goes.

Perhaps I should be looking closer to London...

The estimates IMO are usually longer then the actual time.  Driving would be INSANE!  It's crazy when it's not rush hour, I can't imagine what it's like during!

Don't know much about closer to London, but you might want to take a map and circle out to Guildford and then look at the towns closer.
