Vitamin A in cereals and juice
« on: February 01, 2006, 11:11:17 AM »
So recently I have switched from my women's vitamin containing a small amount of vitamin A to one without it.

Just wondering though if anyone knew anything about whether we should avoid fortified cereals and juices?  For example on a daily basis?

Some ones like the Tropicana Essentials have quite a lot added in.

Um, I can't say I switched anything whilst trying to conceive either girl.  My mulitvit always had folic acid in it, but i'm never one for counting my chickens before they hatch, so I just stuck to my normal foods.  Then again, I don't eat much cereal except porridge.  Mmmmm.  I think you'd have to eat A LOT of Vitamin A for it to have a negative effect on anything.

The research was done with 10,000 IU's... which is a lot... but still... I was advised by Balmerhon and then NHS to stop taking any supplements with Vitamin A, even those with a low amount as you can easily get enough from a balanced diet. Hence my question about fortified foods, which are in essence like taking an added vitamin pill.

Maybe I am weird about thinking about this stuff, but hey...that's just how I am.  I am a researcher by nature and by profession, and while I am far from anal I still like to ask questions and hear what peoples opinions and experiences are.  :)

You've changed your supplement already, tho.  If still concerned, perhaps read the labels on the food and avoid it if you feel apprehensive.

I was never advised, tbh, about anything other than folic acid.  Both girls are healthy and were born full-term.

So that's been my experience  :)

I think there are some vitamins/minerals that you are meant to avoid too much of but blowed if I can remember what. Have you looked on Babycentre?

Good source Britwife...

Basically unless you are eating cereal and fortified foods with preformed vitamin A all day every day... you should be fine.  Still I think I will steer clear of fortified juice and stick to veggies and oatmeal with some cereal with beta caroteen. :-)

I drink lots of juice...

then again you have to ask yourself why put an unnatural vitamin in what is essentially a good for you food anyways?

Indeed!

Still it is good you are looking into these things. I had no idea about any of this stuff until after I found out I was pregnant.   I had mentioned on a visit to the practice nurse at my GP's that we were trying to have a baby and she didn't even tell me about folic acid - I only found out when I went for my pregnancy test.  So, it definitely pays to do your own research.
