Vienna for a night
« on: January 27, 2006, 10:59:13 AM »
I have to travel on business, by myself, to Vienna on Monday/tuesday.  I will be working during the day, but I would love to see something of the city in the evening.  Anyone have any suggestions of place to walk around and possible restaurants?

Thanks!

Oh! Vienna is wonderful. I actually lived there for 6 months. The city is divided into districts. District 1 is the middle of Vienna where all of the main attractions are. Around District 1 is the "Ring," streets that form a ring around the area. Lying along the Ring are all of the museums, the Rathouse and the Opera House. I suggest that you visit this area and the Hapsburg palace that is in the most central part of the Ring. You have to go to Demel. It is a pastry shop/coffee house in District 1 that is amazing and beautiful. It is like a posh Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Also, Stehphansdom is the a very beautiful gothic church in the center of District 1. There is a bar/restaurant on the top floor of the Haas House that is worth visiting because the view of the cathedral is amazing and the bar has a great atmosphere. For a really good cheap weinerschnitzel go to Centimetre. There are several around the city. I could go on!!

Thank you!  Great suggestions and I should be right in the center of the city, the hotel is Hotel Bristol (a Westin) and the address is Kaerntner Ring 1.  Looked very central on a map.

It's the 500th anniversary of Mozart's birth today - no doubt there will be celebratory events in Vienna as well as his birthplace Salzberg.  That could be something to look out for - well if you like Mozart.

That is a perfect place to be. I also thought of a couple more things. Judenplatz has the Holocaust memorial which is very powerful, by a female British artist. Also, besides Demel, there are so many great coffee houses that are so bohemian. Oh, I am envious. It is such a great city. Make sure you walk around at night. It is very safe and the way the monuments and buildings are lite up is gorgeous.
