Jews in the UK (Scotland especially)
« on: February 13, 2006, 01:59:25 AM »
Anyone Jewish out there?  How easy is it to find Jewish stuff (book stores, bakeries, etc...).  I'll be living in Glasgow and am now in Chicago (so you can imagine its quite easy to be Jewish here!).

Thanks :)

Glasgow used to have an enormous Jewish population, but i saw a documentary the other night which said the Jewish population is now down to less than 5000.
Back in the old days, The Gorbals was a huge Jewish area in Glasgow, and there were tons of Jewish butchers, bakers, etc... but i cant recall seeing anything like this... ever... in Glasgow.

This website (i simply googled jews glasgow) states that in Glasgow there are only 2 shops selling kosher food, and there are NO Jewish bakeries or butchers.

There are a few of us on here. Im from Chicago but now live in Coventry. Nothing Jewish here! I hear are lots of deli's and shops in the Golders Green area of London however I havent ever been. I have absolutely no idea about Scotland.

Going to Chicago this weekend for a funeral. I intend to at least have a corned beef sandwich and a real lox and bagel!

Uber_Yank -- I am not Jewish but from a (fictional) book I read last year, I learned that Liverpool (home of the Beatles!) has or has had a significant Jewish community.  (Ok -- it's not Scotland, but northern England.)  Here's a link with more info:

Years ago some parts of the East End of London had significant Jewish communities.   Whether that's still the case, I have no idea.

I'm a jew in the West Midlands. Not much Jewish around here, except for Pebbles in Coventry!  :)
I miss Jewish food sooo much and I usually end up going to London on Saturdays, so anything Jewish is closed.

Not Jewish yet, thinking of converting for the english guy I am dating.    I live in north london and have complete access to good bagels and kosher deli's!  I love it.  Not sure about Glasgow.  I know that the jewish population in East London is waining.  Most have moved out to North London.

But there is still a brilliant (24-hour, if i recall) bagel shop in Brick Lane (East London)!

Sorry none of this is useful for you in Glasgow, UberYank.

Gateshead near Newcastle has a very large Orthodox community.  It's not Scotland, but far north in England, so relatively close.

Thanks for the info Kate! I'm happy there's at least a couple shops in Glasgow!  I also just bought a wonderful Jewish cookbook that has US AND UK measurements! YAY! :)
