What to take? What to leave?
« on: February 12, 2006, 03:03:53 PM »
I know there are topics of what to have brought and what to leave behind..but I didnt really see what I was wondering in those...

I have the beginnings of a milk glass collection...about 10 pieces in all I would say. I found out while in the UK that milk glass is really an American thing and rather rare to find in the UK..so IF I took it I would only be able to collect more by going to the US or finding international shippers on Ebay...

I really like my milk glass...but am struggling with whether or not its worth bringing over...if I were to bring it theres enough to get it in a suitcase, but I am soo worried it would be broken to bits..I have seen the baggage handlers do their job  ::)

Can I mark the luggage as fragile? Will they even pay any attention? I do plan to bring my vintage pryex mixing bowls...they were a rather lucky find and I refuse to part with them ;)

To be honest scouring flea markets/sales etc for the milk glass when I am in the US would be fun...not much fun for DF I am sure, but hed go along cause he loves me  ;D

I flip-flop constantly about it! I need outside perspective from those who have btdt.

If you do decide to bring your glass collection over, I'd take to Mail Boxes Etc. (or somewhere like that) and have them pack and ship it for you. I wouldn't put it in a suitcase.

i had no idea that "junk" my grandmother collected (and now collecting dust in my parents' garage) had a name!!! i had no idea what "milk glass" was so I had a little google, hmm imagine my surprise! I like "cash in the attic" and "the antique roadshow" stuff really surpises me sometimes!!

yeah, as belindaloo said have it packed and shipped rather than checked or carry it on. I'd probably make carry on trips if it was feasible and that precious.

good luck.

hehe one persons trash..lol ;)

Its actually becoming pretty collectible so the days of it being dirt cheap are coming to an end :(

I will definitely get it shipped then, tons and tons of bubble wrap? Does anyone know how much it might cost to ship this stuff (i.e. price per lb or container or whatever, I know you all wouldnt have a clue how much my stuff weighs  ::) )

If you like picking through other people's "trash," as I do, you'll be in heaven in the UK!! Car boot sales are a Sunday must for me and my friends! We've found some incredible treasures, for mere pennies -- including a lot of vintage pyrex! There's a lot of it around! :)

i'd be cautious about labelling boxes "fragile."

DF works for parcel force (feel free to bad mouth them once i log out :P) & told me that parcels marked "fragile" get extra "special" treatment, ie, people tend to practice footie moves on them :-\\\\

$10 per pound is a bargain to send international packages - May I ask who that is with?

it was UPS

Im not sure now which speed I selected.

So if I really want my stuff I have to be willing to pay to get it there...at least when I want it shipped it will be £s so it wont seem so bad...(gotta rationalize hehe)
