My parents were coming and we wanted to celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary. At the time we were living in Cornwall- we checked out the Bedford in Tavistock, Horn of Plenty near there, but as we were taking a country drive (we didn't know the area at all yet) we pulled in a drive in between Okehampton and Tavistock in a small village called Lewdown. There was the prettiest country manor, Lewtrenchard and we just knew it had to be there.
The service far surpassed any expectations- our waiter was French and even deigned to make iced tea when my parent's asked for it. We were treated like kings and queens and the food was superb.
I had a smoked fish brandade on crackers (amazing), beef tenderloins in a sauce that defies description and basic sticky toffee for dessert- with mascarpone ice cream. We had homemade rolls- pumpkin seed, rye and another unusual one. They put an assortment of olives and things out for us. It was great, even the weather was just perfect. We had the flowers on the table that were in my mother's bouquet and we just had a perfect day.
I recommend Lewtrenchard- an apparently you can even get a helicopter flight there from London. Check out their website, they are part of teh Von Essen hotels
