UK Citizenship for US-Born Child
« on: March 02, 2006, 12:04:36 PM »
I am going to be having my child in the US this year.  My husband is a UK citizen and I am a US citizen.  Has anyone been in this situation and have had to obtain UK citizenship for their child?  Also, does the child have to have a UK passport in order to travel to the UK shortly after birth?

Thank you!

Hi,  You will need to report the birth to the UK consulate in the NYC.  This way your child is free of the visa requirements.

Hope it helps Allison :)

You should register your child's birth with the british Embassy.  Your child will automatically be British (by descent) and will be entitled to a British passport.  It will make life a lot easier if you get the passport before travelling to the UK.

Was your husband born in the UK? If not, how did he get British citizenship? I believe there are some rules about not being able to pass on British  citizenship if the child is born outside the UK and the British parent gained their own citizenship other than by descent or birth.

Thanks everyone.  Yes, my husband was born here in the UK and lived in the Cirencester area all his life (I can't imagine only living in one area!!).

How long does the process take?  If it like my fiancee visa, I got it the same day in NYC and it was very easy.  How long does it take to get a passport from there?

Thanks for all of your help - as usual!!!

I have looked for the timeline info in the posted link, so far I have not found one.  Seems you send the application form in via mail.  I need to do the same thing for the baby I am carrying, I will look further.

Things could have changed, so take this with a grain of salt but I was able to do it in a day in NYC.
