With the 2006 five nations rugby championship in full swing i wondered how Americans felt it compared with American football and whether your fing it easy to get into watching/playing?......lots of action on this weekend with games on Saturday and Sunday.

There is an interesting old saying......

''soccer is a game for gentlemen but played by thugs''

''rugby is a game for thugs but played by gentlemen''

I really enjoy rugby. I played for my university and had the best time. I used to play a lot of sports but nothing compared to rugby. Not just the sport itself but the team comaradarie just can't be compared to other sports (in my opinion) but maybe that's just college rugby...I don't know. I do know rugby players know how to party!

I never liked American football but after playing rugby I had a new respect for it. Still don't care for it much and would rather watch a rugby match any day but I don't mind watching it.

I am a big sports fan, particularly football (SF 49ers and Cal Bears). Decided to dive into rugby and have enjoyed it alot. No TV at home so I have been hitting my local for the England Vs whoever games.  It really helped when after watching a few on my own, a friend came along and explained alot of what I had not figured out... I am still lost on a regular basis, but i think i get about 80-85%.  I really like that it is very tough physically, but the players seemed to be respectfull nearly all the time... If I wasn't 40, and still recovering from last years skiing surgury, I would go find a game... with the best part being getting a few pints after...

No cricket is a whole different thing... I love baseball as well and have had a long tutorial on cricket... but all day games... give me a break...

With the 2006 five nations rugby

I think you mean six.

I follow the English RFU national team more than I do any of premiership RFU teams.  Too bad England have no chance of winning the six nations, but hopefully they finish strong and beat Ireland this weekend at Twickenham.

Now for footy, I am a big England and Arsenal supporter.  I wish I could go to the WC in Germany this summer.

What I find really interesting about the UK, is that "the beautiful game", Football, is a very blue collar sport.  Whereas Rugby (the game for thugs) is the white collar sport.

In Canada,  it is exactly the opposite and in SoCal, football was very much the white collar sport (I didn't see much rugby except for the Argentinians, Aussi's and Kiwis who played on the beach).  You had to have money to play in the upper soccer ranks.

My neighbours took us to a Leicester Tigers game and I was really impressed.  not the least of which was the behaviour of the crowd and there were actually families there.  no bad language or anything.  My son has had quite an education going to football games here.

My favourite part of the rugby games, is that when someone is injured, they don't stop the play, the medics go on the field and fix them up around the game.

When the ruggers get a good play going, it is so pretty to watch.

I will always be a die-hard fan of football though.  It is in my blood.  Go Wigan!

and _michelle...  girls play rugby?  Have you told anyone here that you played?  I get enough strange looks when I tell the dads on my son's football team that I've played all my life. I can't imagine what they'd say about girls playing rugby!
Riding the rollercoaster of life without a seat belt!

I'm a football fan, and can't stand rugby (egg-chasing).
Mind you, i did take a slight interest when Scotland beat England a few weeks ago...  ;)

Ah Rugger, i like to watch internationals but get bored watching the domestic game. Never really had the chance to play, being from East London it was either Football or nothing, jumpers for goalposts and all that !   :D
