Christmas in London
« on: November 11, 2003, 10:57:48 AM »
Not sure where to post this question ---

Anyway, my parents are visiting for Christmas.  This is also our first Christmas in London (South Kensington area).

Anyone have any suggestions on a good and affordable Christmas Day dinner/lunch?  I have looked into some of the fancier hotels (Savoy, Langham Hilton,...), and well...a bit too pricey!

How about Christmas Eve church services (any denomination)?
Thanks all!

Not sure what price range you are looking at, but any of the Wetherspoons pubs are having holiday dinners and their food, while not fine dining, is ok.  http://www.jdwetherspoon.co.uk/index.html

There's also SE 10 in Greenwich, owned by one of our MIA forum folks and her husband.  A bit pricier than pub food, but not as much as probably hotel restaurant and definitely worth every penny.  It's a nice casual atmosphere and the food is awesome.

As for church services, I'm afraid I wouldn't know. :(

best of luck!

There's nothing yet about Church Services but here's a website that might be worth a look closer to the time.

My parents went to an Easter service at Westminster Abbey a few years ago and really enjoyed it.

Also there's an American Church on Tottenham Court Road

Hi! Have you thought about having tea instead of a full meal? Some years ago, we had a big family gathering and wanted to do something fancy, so we had afternoon tea at the Savoy. It's not pub grub and isn't cheap-cheap, but it's less than a full meal, and they just kept bringing food --sandwiches, tea, more sandwiches, sumptuous desserts -- and we obliged by eating it until we could barely move.
If you want to just go someplace cool for a bite and don't mind self-service, try the crypt under St Martin's in the Fields on Trafalgar Square. In the evening, there are usually candles, you can move little tables together to make a bigger one, they serve wine as well as a variety of soft drinks, the food selection is really good --and it's pretty cheap. There are wonderful concerts there, as well. Check it out on the Web : http://www.stmartin-in-the-fields.org/jserv/home/index.jsp Happy Holidays!!  :D  St. James Picadilly is another old church with great ambiance, music and food. xo Katelyn
