Dumb question...
« on: March 14, 2006, 05:56:29 PM »
Am I able to use my UK hair dryer and straightener in the US with just a plug adapter?
I've never tried, so I have no idea...

check out the electronics section and pay attention to voltage adapters. depends on your equipment too can it handle UK to US? check out the info on the device... either on a block or handle.

Just asked Paul_1966 this question - he basically said no because the US outlets will not provide enough power to the appliance.  However you can do it if you have an outlet that is made for larger appliances like fridges, etc. because they need more voltage anyway. BUT then, the outlet may be different so you may need a different adaptor than just the usual one.

I'm sure he will answer or I can send you his PM pkessler....

It's very rare for hair dryers, curlers, etc. to be dual-voltage, so any regular British appliance of this type will almost certainly be wired for 240 volts only, and thus not suitable for running on a normal 120V American outlet with just a travel plug adapter.

However, most American houses do have 240V available in them as well as 120V.  It's commonly used to run the range, clothes dryer,  air-conditioning, heating, etc. (not regular domestic refrigerators though -- they are 120V).

If you can find a 240-volt 15-amp outlet, you can run from that by changing the plug on the appliance or using a suitable adapter lead.    You might be able to find one of these 240V outlets feeding a window air-conditioner, a larger baseboard heater, or something similar.  You'll need to check each such possibility individually though, because the smaller units can be just regular 120V.

The 240V 15A outlet is similar in overall size to a normal 120V receptacle, but has the two flat blades in tandem instead of parallel, like this:

If you can find an outlet which looks like that, it will be 240 volts.

if you are travelling to the US in the near future, you can pick up dual voltage hair dryers and curlers, etc at walmart for less than $15. just read the box and make sure it says 11 - 240 as the voltage range.  then all you have to do is get the proper adaptor plug.  i think amazon.co.uk may have dual voltage stuff  here if you are willing to pay.

yeah but my UK hair straigtener is so much better than anything I ever found in the US!  My big problem is going from UK appliance to US voltage regularly without having to lug around a big voltage converter....
