I have seen this in many ads for rental properties. It will say 'sorry no DSS" what does this mean? and what does hob mean or stand for? It seems to refe to a cooktop. Gosh I must sound like a rookie...

DSS is Dept of Social Services. The local gov here pay their rent and if I was a landlord no way would I ever rent to DSS either. A lot time the flats get trashed and it is hard for the landlords. I don't think all DSS people are bad but my experience in my neighborhood is the trouble is always in DSS rented houses. My opinion only.

Hob is just what you thought - a stove top, the bit with the hotplates. Cooker refers to the whole thing - oven, hob and usually a grill.

Than you Ayoubob for clearing that up for me. I'm certain that this will be a daily occurrence in thee assimilation into UK life. I just found out today what a 'supergrass' was, besides a really good band.
