Justice Of the Peace
« on: March 27, 2006, 10:23:22 PM »
Hi all,

We are thinking of being married by a Justice of the Peace.  We will be paying for the service of the JP, but do you also Tip a JP or give them some sort of gift?  If so..any suggestions?

thanks for your help

 :)

i would like to know the same - if you are in the UK getting married.  In the US it is customary to give 'something' to the official

In the UK it is a registrar who conducts civil wedding ceremonies, not a JP.  And no you don't tip them or give a gift - they are an employee of the state so it might be seen as inappropriate.

TY Britwife - it hadn't occured to me before, but after reading the last post, I didn't want to seem ignorant of the customs in the UK!

In the US if you're married by a Justice of the Peace, I *think* it's customary to tip them.  I'm not sure.  I'd google it to check.

I was wondering about whether or not it was customary to tip the registrar as well.  I figured it wasn't since tipping doesn't seem to be done much at all over there, but glad to know for certain now.
