Well, gonna have to break down and buy one of these - just too many British recipes around the house these days.

Do you own a set of kitchen scales, and if so, which brands do you recommend?

Salter Digital Scale -I have a lower end one and it's been going strong for over 5 years.  It's nice in that you can weigh things while in the bowl by hitting the auto zero button.  Makes mixing a cake a breeze. Salter also has none digital ones that are not so dear as well.  As a brand overall I just really highly recommend them for accuracy.  I use mine all the time for conversions as well. (Get one that switches from oz to grams.)  It did come with a volume to weight converter book, but that drove me looney.

Hope that helps.

I think we just recently got the one that vnice described.  It was about £25 from Argos.

Salter Digital Scale

Ditto for me. Mine's yellow! I really love the grams/ounces option since half my cookbooks are American and half are British.

Nope, after 2 1/2 years still haven't bought one and hopefully never will.  It's just one more thing for me to have to clutter up the small kitchen counter we have.  I have been pretty good at converting most things! ;)

I want one of these. I can't decide between digital, spring or weights, let alone what brand!

I like kitchen gadgets.  ;D

actually I telt a porky... :-[ I do have a cheapo one too out of five&dime. I only use it for a rough guide when I do use it on the rare occasion. But its got both systems.

When you get  to my age you've seen things measured like a zillion times so can pretty much eyeball most things if its in American.

If I got a recipe in that new fangle scientific system they call grams, then I convert the measurements and bob's your uncle.

Cant be arsed with conversions... it's not necessary if you use scales.

I have no idea what brand we have, but we bought a digital one, that does fractions of a gram, and oz. We started with a spring one that wasnt cheap but youd think it was for how poorly it performed. Plus it had 5 gram increments as the least...made things hard to measure at times.
