British Citizenship - where to start?
« on: April 11, 2006, 11:05:29 AM »
Hi there
I have lived in the UK for 6 years and been married to a UK citizen for over three years and am considering applying for British citizenship.

To get started on this task, I went to the Home Office's IND website. The website is screwed up and as a result is too slow to use.

I'd be grateful if anyone could tell me where to look for introductory/getting started information on gaining citizenship.  I'm particulalry interested in understanding the right approach to take - ie when and where to apply, as well as how long it takes, whether I'll have to surrender my US passport, etc..

Any help would be appreciated.

Mimsy

The IND web site should be a good place to start to see what the process is for citizenship.

You don't have to surrender your US citizenship if you get British citizenship.

Yes, it is like that all the time, so you just have to be patient.  You can call them to aks for the forms - AN (new) - but it will probably take just as long to get through on the phone!!!

I was at the PEO in Croydon a few weeks ago, and they had several notices posted on the walls indicating that the IND website was currently experiencing server problems, and that it is advisable to try and access the website during non-peak hours.  Perhaps it'll be quicker late at night or early in the morning.
