puter techy help needed please!
« on: April 02, 2006, 09:57:00 AM »
Ok, I don't know if this is possible, and if it is how I can do it, but this is what I want to do. We have a regular printer, and one of those little picturemate photo ones. I want to be able to print a photo off the web onto the picturemate printer, but when I try to, only a part of the picture will print. Is there any way at all to do this, or are the photos on the web too big to print on the little printer.....sorry if this is a bit confusing.

I'm no expert but are you printing straight from the web or have you saved the picture first? It might work better if you save it,  then print.  You can also then resize if necessary.

Yes, straight from the web, can I actually save a picture like that?

I've noticed that quite a lot of browser software is rather lacking in print-formatting options for doing things like this.  As Britwife says, your best bet is to save the image and then manipulate/resize and print it from a separate imaging program.

Sure.   Which browser are you using?   If it's the ubiquitous Internet Explorer, just right-click on the image then select "Save picture as."

Ok, since you guys sorted me out last time, and it worked wonderfully, can you all help again? This time, I am trying to copy pics from email to a folder.....unfortunately, the pics my dad sends are really big files, he doesn't resize them before sending them, and I can't figure how to resize them myself. Therefore, when the pics go into the folder, I only get a part of them. The software we use to resize our own pics from our camera is finepix viewer, but I can't seem to copy the pics my dad sends into that software thingy. Any suggestions??

hiya

I'm not so sure you can resize pics that are on the 'email server side' at present. I may be wrong, but as yet I haven't specifically come across any software or ISP functionality that does this. The pic files are large and are currently 'at' the ISP email server (or Yahoo or hotmail's servers) It may be worthwhile speaking to the tec support of your email provider to see if they offer this functionality.

If not, you 1. could ask your dad to resize them and re-send or, bite the bullet, download all the large pics to your PC and then resize them. If you visit Microsoft.com and search for Powertoys for XP (assuming you're on XP, if not just search for Powertoys) and you'll see a number of enhancements. I currently do use the 'image resizer' - download and install that. Once installed, it's easy to then right click on a large image, and you'll see some sizing options and a custom setting. Choose a lower spec and the software will resize the image for you. You can choose the 'resize original do not make copies' option if you'd like. However, as it's family photo's, I'd suggest making copies and keeping the high quality originals alone. That way, if you should ever choose to print or make larger for poster sized prints, you'll have the most amount of 'quality'

hope this helps!

How are you actually seeing the partial image?  If you've already downloaded the file to your local disk, it should all be there -- Just try using the "Save attachment" option from your mail program.

As Dennis says though, if you're using webmail or something similar and only seeing part of the image which is displayed with the message, then that's the only part which will save unless and until you download the whole file.

Ok, I'm confused. When I open the image in hotmail, which is how my dad sends it, I see the whole image, with a slider bar to move around to see the whole pic. When I save it to a folder, only part of the image is saved, the part in the middle, ie, if it's a pic of my parents with scenery behind and around, I get my parents, but a lot of the scenery on the sides is chopped off. I'll re-read what Dennis!! said, and try and do that..... ???

Ok. I re-read, but if I save the pics, to the software Dennis!! said, won't they go smaller again? The way they do now when I try to save them?

You're californian - you're allow to be confused!

Currently the 'large' pics are on the hotmail server. You can login into your hotmail and there'll be an option to 'download file' or 'Save Attachment' or something of the like (You may not even need to 'open' the picture at this stage - if youre still unsure, check the online hotmail help and it'll tell you exactly). On your PC, create a folder called 'Family Pics' and then download the file to that folder. Repeat for each file or photo. Once complete, you'll have the 'large' images in that folder. I'll assume for a sec that you did install the 'image resizer' powertool from Microsoft onto your machine.

Browse to the 'Family Pics' folder on your PC, you'll see the files there. If you hover over the icons you'll probably see they're large - maybe 2-3 (or more ) Megabytes in size. Now within your Family Pics folder create a subfolder called 'Family Resized pics'. Now go back to the 'family pics' folder and right click over an image, choose resize pictures. In the advanced tab, leave the 'resize original pics' unticked. when you click 'ok' another file will appear with the same name (might be appended with a 'copy' although I'm not sure as I have other software on my laptop which renames certain files. That 'copy' or 'newer' file will be alot smaller in size. Hover over it and it'll probably be anything from 30KB and upwards in size. Alot easier to manage. The 'family pics' has the orignal high resolution pics, and your 'resized family pics' folder has the ones you can lookat always, or transfer to other devices etc etc.

Hope this helps!
