Ocho Rios, Jamaica
« on: April 24, 2006, 05:13:40 PM »
My husband and I are visiting Ocho Rios next month. We'll be at the Goldeneye resort for seven nights. However, we're looking for some off-the-beaten-path things to do away from the resort. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

My wife and I went to Ocho Rios about 2 years ago, if you leave the resort make sure it is with some sort of tour that you booked and there are other people going.  Leaving the resort on your own is not reccomended.  The resorts our fantastic there, but once you wonder of that "beaten path" you are asking for some trouble.  It is a very dangerous and poverty stricken area and you will be robbed and or accosted.  Not trying to scare you, we had a wonderful time there, just watch out.  ALso, don't freak out if you have never been there,  from the main airport to Ocho Rios is like a 90 minute drive, hopefully you chartered a van and are not renting a car because it is a scary drive.

on to more positive things,  we did a river walk tour, i forget the name of it but it's some sort of waterfall as well, that was really great, you walk up stream in a warm river and climb up waterfalls......that's it, Dunns River Falls.  Look for that, you won't be disappointed.

One thing i learned the hard way.  there are tons of tourist traps and nothing is free.  I had a guy ask me my wifes name and my name and the next thing I know he's carving them into some wooden statues.  I fealt obligated after that to by them so I gave him 5 US dollars and looked like I had just slapped his mama.  So the moral of the story is don't tell them your name and if they try to hand you anything say no, if it's in your hand they'll wxpect money.

I know this sounds like I am running it through the mudd, but we had a great holiday there, just sharing some negatives so you can watch out for them.

Funniest thing was standing outside the terminal with the bus driver when we FIRST arrived.  He was waiting on some other passengers to get their bags, 10 minutes the two of us are in Jamaica and the guy driving us to the hotel asks us if we want to by some weed from him.  i thought that was hilarious.

Bloodied, but not beaten!

Thanks for the info! That's good stuff to know, and most people are afraid to share it because they don't want to be "negative." I'd rather know though!

About Dunns River Falls. . .my husband and I were thinking about doing that, but we thought it looked pretty dangerous? Was it?

no, it was not dangerous at all.  There is a large group that goes so in spots where the water is fast moving you all link up in human chain.  In talking to my wife, she reminded me that she thought the water was cold.  We went in February though.  We really like the Falls, take a waterproof camera, there are several stops where the tour guides let you stand under the falls and they take your picture with your camera.  Oh yea, you will get wet in case you didn't know.

hopefully you'll have better weather than we did.  It rained everyday for us, but the locals called it "liquid sunshine"
