name change through marriage

So, for example,  suppose my name is changing from Sweetpeach Jones to Sweetpeach Smith.  If an employer tries to contact my old job in the U.S. and look at the employment record of Sweetpeach Smith, my old HR department isn't going to know who that person is; all their records will show me as Sweetpeach Jones.  The same if someone tries to contact the university I went to for proof that I graduated.  Sweetpeach Jones got a university degree; not Sweetpeach Smith.

Oh, right. I forgot that the British like you to fill out applications for everything. I'm so used to just handing over my resume.

Ok, so I'm here in the UK on a fiance visa, and will be getting married July 15th.... my visa expires on August 5th. I'm hearing all this stuff that I have to change my name in my US passport to my changed marriage name once I'm actually married.... I just got my passport last year. I understand I have to file for an FLR OR LLR or something after I get married.....

Now, since I have a 20 day interval before my viance visa will expire, should I be mailing in my FLR pretty much the day after I marry to ensure it gets there? And once I get my passport back with whatever they put in it to say I can be here for two years, would it be wise to then change my SS card and my name in my passport, so that the IRS doesn't have problems tracking me, as well as when I want to go for a job in the UK, I can just show them my passport without having to whip out my marriage certificate?

Or should I just not worry about name-changing my passport until it's on its way to expire? When will I be allowed to have a bank acccount here? And what about healthcare? Do I get that when I just have the two year extension? (I really have to look into this FLR thing) I mighthave other questions to ask again..... I just don't want to miss a step or have some legal thing bite me in the ass later because I didn't look into the fine print.

1. you don't have to change your name in your passport right away, but be prepared to carry your marriage certificate with you when you travel and book flights in your maiden name. Note:are you flying on your honeymoon?

2. You'll need to apply for Further Leave to Remain after the wedding but before your visa expires August 5th.  If you send it by post as long as it's postmarked by the expiration date it's fine deadline-wise. 

3.  It's up to you at which point you want to change it.  I'm changng mine in the next few months but some people wait until the passport is due to expire or until closer to the time to apply for ILR.  I'm doing it sooner because I'd like to not have my valid passport have my ex-husband's surname in it anymore (i did the amendment thing to revert to my maiden name instead of a brand-new passport in 2004).

4. I 'm fairly sure you would need to show employers that you have the right to work in the UK which would be the FLR sticker in the maiden name passport anyway.  I'd recommend getting a Provisional Drivers Licence for ID.  I have one and I'm petrified of driving over here.

5.  Dunno about opening your own bank account but Alex was able to add me to his existing Nationwide account while I was on the fiancee visa.

6.  You are eligible for NHS care already, as you are here on a settlement visa.  But be warned that the doctor's surgery may give you a hassle about this.  The first one I went to did.

Hmm, I've been reading that I'd have to change to FLR if I plan on leaving the country for when I go on my honeymoon, as if I don't, it could cause trouble. I'd rather pay the cheaper FLR price and wait the four weeks, then go on the honeymoon, as we haven't made any plans as to where we want to go :/

Or you can always honeymoon within the UK, we went to the Lake District or friends of ours went various places in Scotland.
