FLR form and appointment
« on: May 13, 2006, 02:07:49 PM »
When I phoned to make an appointment to apply for my FLR (in the UK) I was told that since my current passport is in my maiden name (don't have enough time to apply for new passport in married name) then my marriage visa will also be issued in my maiden name. This is probably a stupid question, but forgot to ask....  Since the visa will be in my maiden name do I need to fill out the FLR in my maiden name? I have already filled it out in my married name and signed in my married name and listed my maiden name as other names known by.

I think I've read on here somewhere that the marriage visa isn't transferrable to the new passport with the married name.... So, I asked once I got a new passport with my married name, do I carry both passports? He told me no and that it's illegal to carry more then 1 passport. Once I receive a new passport the other becomes invalid. If my passport in my maiden name becomes invalid does that make my visa invalid as well?

So sounds to me that I'm better off not getting a new passport in my married name and keep and travel with my current passport in my maiden that has all my visa in it. With that being the case then when can I get a new passport with my married name? Do I wait 2-3 months before the FLR expires then get my new passport with my married name and have the ILR put in that?

Sorry - I am a bit confused, because I have read other posts where people do travel with both passports - 1 current in the married name and 1 the invalid passport which has the maiden name & the FLR, but I've been told by immigration this is illegal??

I reread one of the posts - ops - my bad... FLR's aren't transferable to a new passport by post, it is if applying in person. Guess that's what I'll be doing very soon  :)

I'm still curious how others filled out their FLR's with passports in the maiden name.... did you fill out the form in your married name and then under 'other names known by' did you put your maiden name.... or did you fill out the whole form in your maiden name?

maybe the issue is that you'll have 2 passports with 2 different names? I know it's completely okay to carry 2 passports (a valid one and one with the visa in it) when the old passport has expired and so the passport has to be renewed, but I'm not sure how it works with a name change. Hmm...

I filled out and signed all my FLR paperwork (sent by post) with married name.  The actual visa has my maiden name but the accompanying letter from the home office explaining that I can work etc. is addressed to my married name.

Two things...

1) It doesn't matter whether you fill the form in in your married or your maiden name.  The IO will, as he said, do the visa in whatever name the passport is in.

2) To suggest that it is 'illegal' to carry two passports is absolute rubbish.

If you are concerned about the visa being in one passport and your valid passport being in another name, just carry your marriage certificate with you.  Remember that the IO's at the airport have seen all this a million times before, and will understand what has happened.
