Need getting married help
« on: May 25, 2006, 11:46:57 AM »
Help I'm an American living here in the UK, I have been here almost 4 years, here teaching and working on a work permit.  My boyfriend are going to be married next year.  We have searched websites etc, about what we need to get, but the only information we seem to find is for people getting married that are coming over for the first time, does anyone know what we need to do, what kind of visa and when we need to start applying for it etc.  Any help you can give will be greatfully appreicated.  Thanks

I would go to the visa section & read a bit in there - or ask the question there.  I know that you will need at least 6 months left on your work visa to get a Certificate of Approval (COA).  You must also give notice to marry / register a civil partnership to a registrar at one of a number of designated register offices throughout the UK.  And then you can get married after that in any register office you want (but you have to apply there beforehand too).

Here's a site to check out:

Hope that helps.

Thanks that has helped me,  Has anybody been through this, is it complicated?  Should I expect problems?  I read all these horror stories.  I would just like to know that for some people it all goes well.  For Andrew and I it seems if it will go wrong it goes wrong for us.  Just hope other people out there have not had problems.

I can't see why it would be a problem - you have over a year on your work permit, so you get the COA...you go to the registry & register...another not big deal...I think we would have it easier than those who have to get a fiance or spouse visa (I may be doing this in the future too as I'm here on a work permit).  Really - it seems quite straight forward (sorta like getting your work permit).
