Required to return to the US? How often?
« on: May 15, 2006, 07:55:44 PM »
Forgive me if this has already been asked elsewhere.  I am a dual citizen (US/UK) relocating to the UK in a couple of months.  My question is, in order to retain my US citizenship, am I required to return to the US every so often... say every 5 years or so?  If so, how often must I return?  My mom freaked me out this weekend by saying I might lose my citizenship if I don't come back every 2 years, but I can't seem to find this information on the US immigration websites.  Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks :)

I helped a Russian woman married to an American expat living in Essex who hasn't been back to the US in 23 years  :o .  Hasn't filed his taxes during that time either   :-\\\\

It is VERY difficult to become an un-citizen of the US.  The only way to become an "un-citizen" it to go to a US embassy, hand them you passport and denounce your citizenship.

Other things that MIGHT make you lose your citizenship would be:
-Becoming an officer in a foreign military
-Serving in a high-ranking political posistion

It is very hard.  Look at John Walker Lindh, he served with the Taliban and still is considered a US citizen.

It's also difficult to lose your UK citizenship - my mom is still a UK citizen by birth, despite having lived in the US for 50 years.  You might want to consider filing US taxes though!
UK resident since 2005, UK citizen as of 2010 due to female British parent.

Ooh yeah, I will definitely be filing US taxes still and all that fun stuff.  Thanks for all the responses... I passed this info along to my mom and she admitted she had out of date info.  Imagine that mom, things can change over the course of 20 years lol  *eye roll*

Well, you mom is right up until the late 70's and early 80's you could lose your citizenship by taking an oath for another country.  So in your mom's defense it has changed over the past 20 years!
