Flights being Cancelled
« on: February 02, 2004, 12:01:44 PM »
Has anyone had their flights cancelled over the past week or so due to terrorist stuff?

I am a little worried bout moving back home but not the actual living there but the flight to there.

I just hope things calm down a little before we head home.

I've already got a ticket to go over and take care of some business at my mother's 20-23 February.  As the days go by, I'm wondering if I'm actually going to make it... :-/

We have flights into and out of GAtwick in March so I worry a bit, but thus far Atlanta has not been one of the airports flights have been cancelled out of.

Unless there's news that I've missed today ... the number of flights cancelled is probably much less than 1%.  And have you noticed that the cancellations are all from airlines with a country's name in theirs, and mostly to / from main airports and capital cities.

I flew Gatwick to Minneapolis last week, returned later in the week; not a problem. Chances of your flights being cancelled, I would think, pretty slim!

I was relieved to see that the cancellations have not included SFO

And if it was cancelled it is nice to know that the airline was doing their best to protect us :)

I'm not worried about the flight being cancelled so much as I'm worried about being so worried about the flight that I'm just not able to make it.

And for me that's a lot - because I've been flying internationally since I was 6 months old.  My father was a pilot and my mother was a stewardess (it was the 60s - she was a stewardess NOT a *flight attendant*).  Flying is almost second nature to me.

So it's taken a lot to get to the point where I'M worried about it... :-/

Martin and I are flying Gatwick to Houston on the 9th and coming back on the 20th (with BA).

I suppose when I heard the news I was a bit worried. I always seem to pick travel dates around high alerts so Ive kinda come to the decision that if I feel jittery I just wont fly. Simple as that. I cant fly that plane or check every passenger myself so I have to trust the airline and airport do that and do it well.

One side of me really thinks that the airlines who cancled a few flights the other day are just totally paranoid. I mean all of the other airlines kept flying - Delta, American, Virgin, Air Canada, KLM, NWA, Indian Air, etc etc etc. The list is a long one.

On the other hand I cant blame BA, Air France, and Continental for canceling those flights if they thought there was a genuine risk. What gets me though is why they only canceled planes at certain times to certain cities. Surely if the threat was great enough to cancel a few flights it would warrent the cancelation of ALL US bound flights. *shrug*

I'll leave it up to my gut instinct and the airlines. I cant sit in my house for the rest of my life afraid to live.

I wish you all very safe trips on your journies to come.

And another thing - one of the most recent flights to be cancelled was a BA to Miami.  I'm flying Virgin to Miami - you know, where that IDIOT girl made the *joke* about having a bomb?   :P

Peedle I am with you in that the older I have gotten the more wary I have become...I don't quite have that feeling of exhiliration I once felt at take off. I just guess Sept 11th kind of took that away a bit...though I know it's pure silliness.  The streets of Atlanta are far more dangerous to me than a plane, but the images I am afraid will never leave me not matter how much I still love going to the airport because it means a new adventure a new place to go and not leaving my love behind.

I flew right after 9/11  because my wedding took place 11 days later.  I flew on one of the first flights allowed out of Hartsfield.  I flew so they would not win, but it still is different for me.

Sorry thread hijack! ;)

I was due to return to Florida from a visit to the UK on September 12, 2001.  Needless to say, I didn't make it back as scheduled...but I wasn't nervous at all about flying out as soon as I was able - a week later.  It's even worse for me, I guess, because it's not any REAL threat that has me upset or concerned.  It's all the political *intelligence* crap that I'm more than worried about... :P

Back around the first part of Jan. my son was flying back to the states on BA from a visit in Spain, stopping at LHR. They had just cancelled all those flights from LHR...but not to Boston, so he made it back fine. I am a bit nervous about my flight next week because I have the twins with me and I am flying into LHR. But, I have flown a lot (and back and forth to the UK a lot this past year) and I don't think the risks are any higher than back before 9/11...in fact, I think it is safer now. I believe the reason that only a few airlines have cancelled specific flights was because of intelligence indicating the possibility of problems being on those targets only. I am hoping Boston stays out of the "hotseat."

Flight cancellations and problems are nothing new - it's just that there's a "new kid on the block" in terms of reasons. Airlines are well use to dealing with incidents and know it's in their best interest to look after their customers.  I guess with a terror threat, they have to screen the passenger list more carefully as they get them through by other means, but they *do* get them through as rapidly as possible, and minimising inconvenience. It's called "customer service ;).

The first time I had a flight cancelled on me, I was travelling with a child to the USA for Christmas, and the airline concerned [should I tell you it was BA ?] told everyone to go home and phone in for a re-booking - which they offered for 2 weeks later because "you bought a cheap ticket, sir". This was about 15 years ago, and the airline was newly privatised and still acted like a government department.

By contrast, my daughter had a flight cancelled on her a few years ago; she had probably paid less for the ticket than I had for my BA one, but they were well looked after, arrangements made, and she was "only" a day late home.  On my way back from the USA just last week, there was a mechnical problem on the plane so we taxied back to the stand, another aircraft was obtained, and in the end we were only 4 hours late at Gatwick. These very rare delays get shorter!

I have already flown transatlantic 3 times in 2004, seen some of the increased security, and feel that the airlines really are looking out for their passengers these days.  Still happy to fly (but exhausted from it) and also happy for the children to fly unaccompanied - direct flights, and an airline such as Virgin or JetBlue, please!
