Voicemail(box) rental?
« on: May 04, 2006, 03:06:19 PM »
In L.A., I used to be able to get a voicemail number for cheap; to use on a temporary basis for shows, etc. (like a box office number).

Any idea how to find a service like this in the U.K. (specifically London)?

I just want a number that people can call into and leave a message, that's it.  Then I can call them back from my one phone.

I don't know about one here. I have one in the states that my friends and family can call. I have it set up so the message arrives via email and I can open the attachment and listen to it on the computer.

Ah, husband just informed me there is now one available in the UK. It's called J2 Messenger or J2 Connect.  A person can call the number and leave a message or fax you and receive via email. I haven't actually looked into it and don't have a link at the moment but maybe it can be searched for on the net. Ours in the states is free but I don't know about over here. Maybe this is at least a good place to start.

Will post more if I find out anything!

Modified: Ok, here is what I found out. jConnect costs only £8.50 (GBP) per month*, with a one-time £8.50 (GBP) fee to activate your account. Receiving faxes with a local jConnect number is free, subject to the Customer Agreement . j2 charges £0.12 (GBP) per page* for faxes received at toll-free jConnect numbers. Faxes sent anywhere in the US cost £0.06 (GBP) per page.  There are a load of numbers available depending on the area you want.

The weblink is: https://www.j2.com/jconnect/twa/page/locations?rqcp=1

Not sure if when a post gets modified, it bumps it up or not but just wanted to point out I found the weblink!

It doesn't, so you were right to bump it up yourself!  :)

What company is that US service through?  Are you happy with the service?  I think that's a great idea for us!

If it's in the U.S. I think it is still free.  I could be wrong as we set it up a year or so ago from the U.S. side.  I am not in the UK at the moment otherwise i would have a link for you but if you just do a search for jConnect, info should come up about it.  If not, I will have a look at ours when we get back to the UK and post more. If you find what your looking for, just give it a post here (or if you don't). We have been pretty pleased with it.

what about skype (or something similar)?  you can buy a london number that costs $38 (or 20 quid) for the whole year and it comes with voicemail.  you can receive all the calls you want without an additional fee and can check your voicemail from any computer (assuming there is a speaker/headphones available).  in not too sure about checking your skype voicemail from a landline as i have never tried that (there might be an option though)....but as long as you're near a computer, you're golden.

On the US side, we found eVoice.com.  They offer both free and paid services.  Paid services are as cheap as $45/year and allow you to select your area code along with the ability to access your messages via email OR phone (and caller ID).  The free version gives you a completely random number and email access only.  We've been happy with the service so far.
