Rambling question..
« on: June 05, 2006, 09:09:15 AM »
How do you deal with the bulls/steers?

DH and I have just started rambling.  I'm quite enjoying it but it seems everytime we go out, we run into a foul tempered bull/steer.  One animal actually postured toward us and yesterday, we were crossing a pasture and the second we committed, a herd of about 25 steers, decided they were going to change pastures.  We were quite far away from them, but as we got further and further through the field, they got faster and faster and then made a trajectory toward us.  Fortunately, we were fairly close to the fence by then so we all ran as fast as we could and got over the fence before they got to us.

I just don't have any experience with farm animals and don't know the intricacies of bovine etiquette.  Any suggestions?

I do a lot of walking in the countryside  and occasionally take footpaths across a farmers field with animals grazing.......just be aware of your surroundings, keep an eye out for a quick exit and keep an eye on the animal's reaction to you being there......9 times out of 10 they look and go about their business.....bulls are the same as long as you don't get between them and their cows/calfs and they'll leave you alone......(helps to carry a big stick too )....what worries me more than them is the farmers mastiff (and some of them are as big as small bears) who may be coming the opposite way and off the lead, a lot of the farmers in this area have them.......packs of wild dogs are another kettle of fish altogether and they can be seriously frightening when you're miles from nowhere.......
