yoga?
« on: March 30, 2006, 05:43:58 AM »
any users into yoga? i'm waiting to get a 'proper' job before deciding which gym/yoga gym to join, and will probably end up doing yoga daily at home the days I don't do it at a gym with my yoga videos.

i'm looking for more good yoga videos (some of the instructors really get on my nerves) and am welcoming any suggestions.

yay for yoga :)

I absolutely love it. I'm trying to decide whether to go on the waiting list for the class near my house or join a class near work. I don't really like tapes/DVDs cause I feel like I need someone there to make little corrections to my poses.

I've lucked out with really great instructors in the US, so I usually end up feeling pretty OK whilst doing the at-home yoga, but I can def. see how you might want to have your poses corrected, they always manage to feel better wehn you do them properly lol.

just wish i could afford to go to this yoga gym daily, would be WELL over 100 quid a month though  :\\\'(

Hiya!

I'm new into yoga (my sister loves it and got me into it) and after reading through reviews on yoga dvds to try I ended up going with Geri Body Yoga.

Now I'm not a Geri Halliwell fan, but I actually really like this dvd. This is her second yoga dvd (supposedly she talked alot in the first one and there were alot of complaints about it) and she actually doesn't do the instructing - it's a woman named Katy Appleton. There is also a guy named Nate that does more simpler poses as Geri is doing the more complicated poses, so you can follow which ever one you feel comfortable with. Geri only has a bit of comments here and there but she isn't annoying to me at all (which is a big plus!)

There are four different parts (warm-up, strength, bliss and chill) and I usually just do either the warm up (20 minutes or so) or that with the strength (another 20 minutes). 40 minutes a day is enough for me! I want to master the positions in these two before I move onto the 3rd level, but so far I am loving the first two! I recommend it (but keep in mind I'm a beginner!) Go yoga!

I'm moving over in May and will need to find a good Yoga studio... any recommendations?  Either in Canary Warf area or West London (Kensington, Notting Hill)?  I prefer power (athansia) yoga classes and have been very spoiled here in the US with a fabulous studio.  Any websites or places to search for yoga studios?

I belong to the Fitness Exchange gym in London Bridge (Cottons building) and they have at least two yoga teachers, one who does a beginners class i'm trying to make time for and another that does the more advanced stuff. It's a pretty good gym otherwise with a pool, lots of equipment and pretty varied classes. I'm really new at yoga tho so i'm no expert, but I like it so far and the teaching is competent.

I just saw this post and thought I'd put in my 2c. Of course the Yoga DVDs that you like will probably depend on the type of yoga you prefer to do, but I love Rodney Yee. He does Ashtanga yoga that can be pretty strenuous, but really good. Check gaiam.com for his DVDs plus DVDs by other instructors.

I love Beth Shaw's Yogafit (power yoga). It's a great workout, but a lot of people pooh-pooh it because she focuses mostly on fitness and staying in shape and doesn't place much of an emphasis on meditation/spirituality and getting the poses exactly right.  People seem to either love her or hate her.

i like the yoga journal series of DVD's.  Rodney Yee does one tape and another woman does the other.  They're really pretty scenery....

I would like to get a yoga CD or Tape as i find that less distracting.

Both good sites if you want to try a method that is true to the original yoga style.  Fad yogas and teachers that aren't actually qualified can be dangerous.  Just my 2p

Of course I am a teacher trainee, so I might be a bit partial.  ;)
