Day trips from NW England
« on: July 21, 2006, 09:54:51 AM »
I'm in Carlisle, Cumbria. We're looking for some places to see over the weekend. Somewhere that won't be more than a 3 hour drive so something in either NW or NE England or Scotland. We've been all over the Lake District but I'm still open to going there if someone knows of something great that I might not have already seen. I'm also not looking to spend any money really. Maybe a few pounds if it costs to see something but not much more than that. If there's a place that will be nice to take pictures of then it'll make me happy. Just looking for some scenic stuff, I guess or places to hike around or some castles or things like that.

Thanks if anyone has any ideas!

Speaking for NE England, Castle Howard is lovely.  You can visit the grounds and the shops for free, but the tour of the home costs.  There are some nice things to see in York that are inexpensive or fairly cheap.  The Railway Museum is free and especially nice for children.
Just a few thoughts....

There was another thread on exactly this a few months ago..it might have been Day trips from Newcastle, but it's about the same.  Try a search.

Thanks, Grace. I'll check those out online and see what I think.

Victoria, if you're talking about this thread ( http://talk.uk-yankee.com/index.php?topic=23992.0 ) I've looked at it but thank you.

I actually decided to check out the coast at Kirkcudbright in Scotland this afternoon but we got halfway there and my husband got called back to town for a job. Bleh. Have to go tomorrow.

I used to live in Carlisle (well just outside actually). I'm not overly fond of the border area on that side of Scotland though the Solway Firth is nice. We used to do bits of Hadrian's Wall and a trip to the NE coast (including Holy Island) is worth it. There are some cute villages in the Eden Valley, too. Have you done any of those?
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon
