Can someone copy a book for me?
« on: July 21, 2006, 09:19:12 AM »
Help! I found a reference which is perfect for my Master's thesis (due in August), but there is no copy anywhere near me. Interlibrary Loan is iffy - last time I used it I ordered two books, one got here in little over a week, another took several months. This one I need soon.

Places where it is located are: Cambridge, Oxford, Manchester, SAS, SOAS, and British Library. Is there someone on the lists here with access to one of those libraries who could make me a copy and mail it to me? I will reimburse you for costs and trouble, and give you my thanks in the acknowledgements of my thesis.

If someone thinks they can do this let me know and I will send you details of the book and how to post it to me.
Thanks
David

Do you want a particular part of a book copied or an entire book?  I would guess there are copyright laws that would prohibit copying an entire book.  I study at the BL often and they are pretty strict about copying over there.  Anyway can you give any more details?

I suspect I'll only need one part, but I don't know what part.

The book is in German. It is "Bundniswerben Abendlandischer Machte um Persien 1453-1600" (give or take a couple of umlauts) by Barbara von Palombini.

I don't really want to start a discussion on copyright. Just say I don't have a problem with it. But I don't want to ask anyone to do something they are uncomfortable with. I've never been to the BL so I don't know what kind of policies they have there.

Hmm, perhaps if you could copy the table of contents or index I could identify a section of interest.

Yeah the BL would definitely notice someone trying to copy an entire book - I have seen people being told that they cannot copy more than x number of pages, etc.

BL is pretty strict. Uni libraries are less so. And if I'm not mistaken, you can photocopy pretty extensively  for academic purposes. Sorry I can't help you - I've been in your shoes before!
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

OK. Like I said, if I could get a copy of the Table of Contents I could figure out what section would be the most use. I'm focused on the later part of the time period, so if it is arranged roughly chonologically then I might just need the last chapter or something. geetak- Would it be too much trouble for you to do that for me? It makes it a little more complicated, a two step process, but would narrow down what needs to be copied.

Its good I heard this, I was planning to go to the National Library of Scotland next week and do extensive copying, hadn't thought of it but they might have similar restrictions. I'll have to plan a little more carefully before I go. I'm used to university libraries where they don't notice what you do there becasue thier staff is underpaid disinterested students.

Just FYI for anyone, these are the British Library's copying regulations:

Onsite Self-Service paper copying regulations
Unless the item you are copying is out of copyright, or you have the written permission of the copyright holder, it is advisable to stay within the following limits:

Up to 5% or one whole chapter (whichever is the greater) from a book, report, pamphlet, etc.
Up to 5% or one whole article (whichever is the greater) from a single issue of a journal, magazine or newspaper
Up to 5% or one paper (whichever is the greater) from the proceedings of a conference
Up to 5% of an anthology of short stories or poems or one short story or one poem of not more than 10 pages (whichever is the greater)
Up to 5% or one single case (whichever is the greater) from a published report of judicial proceedings.
Please also note the following:

The copy can only be used either for:
Research or private study, neither of which may be for a commercial purpose
or
Criticism, review and news reporting

Unless it is impractical, the source of all copies must be acknowledged

You should only make a single copy, and this should not be further copied.

If the copy is needed for a commercial purpose, or if you cannot comply with the criteria above, you must have the prior permission of the copyright owner or pay a copyright fee.

As I said, BL is very strict, unis are less so. The V&A is also notoriously terrible for students - I had to completley alter my research angle because of their prohibitive costs.
